Put the phones down!!

I go outside to take a break at work today, thinking that I might enjoy a quick chat while enjoying my cigarette. Five people were sitting at the table with their phones in their face. I sat down at the same table as them and nobody so much as looked up. I started checking my phone (really reading blogs on CS) and sat there for 15 minutes and nobody ever acknowledged me or said a word to anyone else. Finally after I finish my cigarette I got up and went inside and back to work.

There used to be a time when taking break was fun. It was a time for you to chat with your work friends or complain about something going on. I would enjoy talking about my family and pets and hear the other people talk about theirs, plans for the week/weekend, and so on. Honestly, I think that if I had these people on Facebook and emailed them while sitting beside of them they would carry on a conversation.

Everywhere I go people are constantly on there phones. How did this world ever function without cell phones? laugh I remember, as a teenager, having to stop and use a payphone to call home if I wasn't going to be home in time. I remember everywhere I'd go people were always talking. Mind you, this is the south, people don't have to know you to talk to you here. They smile and just start talking to ya, or at least that's how it used to be.

I know it's a new generation thing that is impacting everyone now. They have the latest cell phone and the world at their fingertips. I just miss the days where people would sit down and have good, fun conversations and really get to know people, aside from what they saw on Facebook. blues

Hi ShineGirl wave

If I can't beat 'em, I'll just join 'em wink laugh
And did you discuss this with anyone or just post this blog?
OB, why do you ask?laugh
Well it's a new age world

rolling on the floor laughing
OB, I've only been on this job for a week and don't know anybody very well. I was afraid that if I actually spoke up and started talking about such thing that they'd think I was weird. laugh It's a delicate conversation. Usually you get to know your co-workers a little more at break.
DC, I ended up looking at my phone, too. But I really wanted to talk. blues
I think technology has taken over the world.

In the middle of talking to one of my neighbors she immediately began texting on her cell phone.

I thought how rude so I never spoke to her again after that.

I've seen husband, wife and children sitting at tables in mall sitting there texting on their cell phones.
Awwww...SG, give it more time? After all, you have only been there for a week?

My girlfriends ( back in my hometown ) and I regularly checked on our cellphones when we go out for meals. Some are more preoccupied on their phones than others. I have to agree that I could be very annoying and frustrating at times but Like OB pointed out, it's a 'new age world' dunno
Cc wave

"I've seen husband, wife and children sitting at tables in mall sitting there texting on their cell phones."- a very common scene here too.

Since my kids hardly see their dad, I've advised them to put their cellphones away when they are dining together. I want them to interact more with him.

When they are dining with me, the only time they take out their phones is when they are upset with me after I give them a long lecture ( could be anything ) before we leave the house. They'd then snubbed me and give me a cold shoulder mumbling laugh grin
DC, it's one thing to check them. It's another for them to consume people's lives. I notice it all around me. Like Shaken was saying yesterday, people look like zombies walking around holding their phones and looking at them. Like CC says.....it's rude sometimes. There isn't anything that demands so much of our time like people spend on their phones now.

Yes, it is a new generation, but I'm just saddened to see it sometimes.
Apart from my daughter and my mom...my phone has become my best friend.
Yes, exactly CC.....everybody is consumed with their phones and checking them. I remember a few years after cellphones came out and my parents would try to contact me. They'd be like, "I tried to call you. Don't you have your cellphone?" I'd just answer them and tell them I didn't have that cellphone on me all the time.

I'll tell ya something else I remember. I remember going to concerts and holding up a lighter till your fingers would burn and everybody was hi off the fumes. laugh Now everybody uses their cellphone flashlights. Just not the same. frustrated
That's it, Prof. laugh Everybody is married to their phones these days. It won't be anytime that we will have robots as partners. laugh
I watched a couple, looked like "date night"...both on their phones and absolutely no conversation between them. Quite sad, really
We always go out for breaks without our phones. We chat and laugh.

Same if out with friends we'd never be checking for mails etc.

I purposefully didn't put Internet on my phone. As I didn't want to be constantly on it. If I'm not at home, or on wifi, then no Internet.

I talk to my friends instead.
Shine
I laugh more with my phone more than anyone...gutty laughs too at times
Manu, it really kills me to see someone walking around in the store while shopping talking about gossip. It's not even an important phone call. frustrated I don't want to hear their business.laugh
Prof, you're probably laughing because you're reading the blogs on here. laugh
Molly, that's nice that you all do that. I miss the days of having a friends to sit and talk with....laugh till I cry. Haven't had that in a really long time.
Yeah Shine, I am lucky to have great friends, who are good fun too.

I get on well with my work mates too, so it's all good joy cartwheel joy
Shine
You are a hundred percent correct..it keeps me feeling younger.banana yay
I have great friends though, friends for over 15 years..and some a little less...but what can I say, my phone is always with me.laugh
well I had to kinda teach one of mine a lesson lately rule here is if someone is in house we leave everything off if im at computer I would turn off .lately he would say don't turn off da I want to check my emails then he proceeds to mail to people so I turned on telly loud to make a point he looks at me and says da that's very rude im here to talk so he learned lesson now as always
Hello Shine, wave I was recently at a neighbors birthday party. He was 86, and his family stopped in for cake, and a little gathering. His grandchildren sat there texting, doh , They didn t chat, or wish him happy birthday, confused I found it so sad, their grandfather , a great guy, interesting fellow lost out to texting. I hope someday those youngsters realize what a special day they missed out on.
And yes new technology is great ,..... but I figure it comes at the cost of manners, work ethic, and being polite, doh
