Recycled fashion.

What is everyone's thoughts on recycled fashion ie. making outfits out of materials that are not normally used for fashion like paper, etc? The reason for my question stems from numerous youtube pages where people are making outfits from materials not used in day to day fashion. The humble garbage bag is a classic example as countless people are using them to make dresses.

A good female friend of mine called Ruby did this. She made a kitchen tidy skirt using a single plastic kitchen tidy bag. The only criticism she got was because she wore a kitchen tidy bag, some thought she had a plastic bag fetish.

quite artistic , I`d say
Hi I love recycling. I like to make beautiful cushions from say, dresses in Oxfam /thrift shops. Also, take beautiful Designer buttons, from a very old Jacket [that I often buy in same shops] that would normally cost alot and put them on a coat giving it a more expensive look.

I do recycle all I can but I am not really excited about going out in Black plastic [from Sacks recycled] or Tin foil used for cooking ! Nope, I recycle furniture, pieces of wood, and materials, clothing but plastic isnot a material I like for ecological reasons and I hate it next my skin. Good Blogwave
When my friend told me she was designing a plastic bag skirt, my initial reaction was, "are you mad?" But I guess it was a creative project that she liked. Her reason was the thin plastic was a much better alternative to paper. As a loyal friend I supported her.
I think you have to be very artistic to pull it off.

Otherwise you just look like you are wearing recycled rubbish

Having said that, I have bought clothes made of recycled plastic, etc. But they were made professionally, and only I know what they are made from.
I know at one stage there was a big call for plastic bottle tops to be spun into fleeces.

I wouldn't care much for wearing plastic - not even crazy about nylon and synthetic fabrics, although they're great for holidays (packing / washing out / etc) but I do prefer cotton, linen and wool which you could say were all recycled to start with ... and can turn eventually into dusters and even paper, which I don't think the synthetic ones can.

I do have an excellent paper hat, not a folded newspaper one, the real deal laugh
Biff, I have a fantastic fleece made from recycled plastic. It is probably the best one I ever bought.
This friend of mine was the first lady I knew that wore plastic bags. When I think of it, it kind of makes a statement for environmental awareness. I don't think there are many that will agree on my opinion. To make it clearer, she didn't risk embarrassment by wearing a plastic bag in public. She told me that she would wear a satin dress over the top.
Gingercat I can see more and more shops selling materials made from recycled plastic, and biodegradable
products. Many faux leather products look really well and Vegetarians/Vegans like them.

I do like when the College of Fashion Design put on their annual shows which include paper and plastic dresses, but they are for the young, beautiful and very slim.laugh
