Opera blog

RIP Montserrat Caballé, one of the great singers from my new country. She was 85

Don't imagine many opera buffs in CS but some may remember the opening ceremony of the Barcelona Olympics in 1992 - not live, as Freddie Mercury had died the year before. The video is "Barcelona" being performed in 1988. Piss off your neighbours, play it really loud.

TRACES: Steve Perry...

Steve Perry best known as front man for the rock group JOURNEY from 1977 to 1987 also spawned a solo career in the 80's and 90's and left the music scene due to health and family issues.

Like many other groups who disbanded, the fans always wished Steve would come out of retirement and rejoin Journey. He didn't. Journey was fortunate enough to find Arnel Pineda from the Philippines who has an amazing 'Perry sound alike' voice. That put Journey back on the map.

Recently, Steve made an appearance for Journey's induction to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Announced on August 14, 2018, Steve will release a new 10 track studio album titled TRACES on the 5th of October.

Lots of rumors over the years should soon be over. All the usual music sources and many rock stations are eagerly awaiting this new material. He's already released a new video for the song NO ERASIN' that's available on YouTube.
Congratulations Steve, it's about time!

Rock musicians hand gestures...

I cannot recall what cool cultural sign Americans made prior to the 1960's 'peace sign' but I do know that singer Ronnie James Dio popularized the 'sign of the horns' when he replaced Ozzy Osbourne (who used to give a peace sign) in the heavy metal group Black Sabbath.

Ronnie wasn't the first to do this and stated it publicly, however people remember Dio's Apotropaic Magical symbol said to ward off evil spirits.

(excerpt quote from Ronnie James Dio)
"...It's an Italian thing I got from my Grandmother called the MALOCCHIO. It's to ward off the Evil Eye or to give the Evil Eye, depending on which way you do it. It's just a symbol but it had magical incantations and attitudes to it and I felt it worked very well with Sabbath..."

More than 40 years later, It's gone 'cross culture' and appears in many selfie photos, movie stars appearances and especially photos of hip-hop artists.

On this date in history: Jimi Hendrix...

On September 18, 1970 Jimi Hendrix died in London England. Life was short for Jimi who left this world at the age of 27, but the music he created inspired millions...

It's hard to believe his magic happened more than 48 years ago.

Bluesy...

I had a carpenter scheduled to replace some wood fascia this morning, but he cancelled at the last minute citing, the rainy weather we had all week put him behind in commitments. That's understandable... except he fell one rung on my ladder of reliability. That was something he should have announced last night. Actually, 2 rungs... he cannot read email from the new phone purchased. I was going to give him a drawing of something I needed done (instead of email) now it will get delayed a little more.

My plan was to work online from home while he was here, but I'll head to the office after a few errands. One of my old monitors is 'blanking out' from a faulty power supply, so I need to switch things around and do computer maintenance that I haven't had time for.

I already started on a few YouTube videos this morning... Jim, thanks for linking the Kamala Harris grilling Brett Kavanaugh. That was great!

I'm an upbeat person, but I like to listen to blues. British Blues to be specific.
I know, I know... they learned the blues from Black Americans. It's their interpretation I like so much about it. To me, It's inspirational not depressing.

Of my favorites... Free. They started as a blues band and later changed to rock.

Songs about D R U G S...

Long before I was born, people were writing songs about drugs. Due to censorship many had hidden meanings. The 1960's changed all that. The first I can recall was Steppenwolf with The Pusher. On a sweeter note, the Beatles recorded Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds. I read that was about their experiences with LSD.
It doesn't end there and though I respect a musicians passion for recording music about drugs, drug addiction and recovering from broken lives from the use of drugs, it sits oddly that there's such a great audience who want to listen to songs about drugs.

She's divorced with two kids in middle school, has a great job, nice house, eats healthy, non-smoker, rarely has more than a social drink with the girls, concerned about the environment, dedicates time for the gym, seeing to it that her kids make it to soccer practice and attend school marathons. She gives 100% support for all women's causes and has a pink ribbon bumper sticker.

Do you know her? There's a few on every block. At the Bar-B-Que she's friendly and enjoys the music... the transformation occurs when they play a Clapton song. That's were she has her arms in the air... well at least one as the other is holding her drink. Bumping butts with the other girls who want to be like her and all the single guys are wanting to be with her.

What Clapton song? Cocaine.
Maybe that's not the right song to sing in front of your kids.
Come sing it with me...

"If you wanna hang out, you've gotta take her out... Cocaine
If you wanna get down, down on the ground... Cocaine
She don't like, she don't lie, she don't lie... Cocaine

If you got bad news, you wanna kick them blues... Cocaine
When your day is done, and you wanna run... Cocaine
She don't like, she don't lie, she don't lie... Cocaine
If your thing is gone, and you wanna ride on... Cocaine
Don't forget this fact, you can't get it back... Cocaine

She don't like, she don't lie, she don't lie... Cocaine
She don't like, she don't lie, she don't lie... Cocaine"
