Truck Drivers Deserve a Little Extra Love These Days

Truck Drivers Deserve a Little Extra Love These Days
Our truck drivers exemplify the drive that keeps our stores moving. We’ve always known this, but during these difficult and uncertain times, knowing we can count on them to continue to provide our stores, our communities and our families with what they need when they need it is even more reassuring. Their heroic efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. Our team members, customers and communities have rallied around these road warriors and shown their appreciation. Since we shared the story of one of our distribution centers providing meals for the over-the-road truck drivers who make deliveries there, we’ve heard even more stories from the road about ways our truck drivers are being honored. Here are a few stories that I wanted to share with you in the hopes they inspire you to show a little extra love to the truck drivers serving your community.

-Rick Keyes,

Meijer President & CEO

Meijer Truck Driver Gets Birthday Surprise

Don Pratt, a Meijer fleet driver for nearly 10 years, was driving down US-31 north of Muskegon, Mich. one morning in early April when a driver pulled up in the lane next to him and matched his speed. When he looked over, the driver rolled down their window to give him a thumbs up while the passenger cheered and applauded him out of their window.

Little did those customers know that their show of support would mean a little extra to Pratt on that day — his birthday. “It made me feel very proud to be a driver for Meijer,” Pratt said.

Those customers also couldn’t have known what a particularly outstanding driver they chose to applaud. As a veteran, Pratt helps Meijer support Wreaths Across America each December by delivering truckloads of wreaths for wreath-laying ceremonies at cemeteries across the country to honor fallen heroes. He is also an avid Cub Scout volunteer.

Team Members Make Goodie Bags for Delivery Drivers

Our truck drivers face challenging times as they travel across the Midwest without access to comforts such as dine-in restaurants. Knowing this, team members started making goodie bags for the drivers who deliver the products our customers need. For example, at one Meijer store in Kalamazoo, Mich., team members prepared goodie bags full of snacks, baked goods and energy drinks with a note of appreciation for the truck drivers delivering to their store.

Buying a used car in Florida...

Hurricane Ian passed through Tampa, Florida last month and flooded the entire west coast. Photos of waist high waters in several counties were on the news. Many of the cars had to be totaled due to salt water intrusion. Once water enters a vehicle and soaks into the wiring harnesses and electronics, the reliability lost and the vehicle can become hazardous with all sorts of irregularities both mechanical and electrical.

What happens to these vehicles? That depends on the decision of the insurance company. They could write checks to the owners of cars and pay out current value. They take the cars and dispose of them. If the damage is minor, they could offer a lower settlement for the owner to keep the car but have to re-register the title. That puts the vehicle in a different classification similar to rebuilding a junker! Your old car isn't what it used to be.

Reclaimed cars in the hands of insurance companies often get sold at auction, many of them are bought by wholesale companies who special in the used car market. They get cleaned and appear aesthetically 'in good condition' only to be moved around the state and sometimes other states to be resold. Some get shipped out to foreign countries.

This isn't a new problem and happens after hurricanes, floods and other disasters.
If you are planning to buy used after a hurricane, make sure you have a reliable technician/mechanic go over the vehicle and do a careful inspection specifically looking for signs of water damage. What to look for? cars with a mildew odor, late model cars where the interior and seats were replaced is a good starting point.

All cars have a history and it's recommended to pull the 'car fax' report to see the history and location of every time it was bought and sold. Also if there are any damage reports.

Taking that further, be wary of buying a used car in (or from) Florida...

road rage ...

as a professional driver for many years , and having seen the good and bad drivers , with or more likely with out licences ,
i have not encountered road rage in person , yes i have had people honk their horns because they are impatient , especially if it is a dual carriage way and i need to over take a slower truck , and i am holding them up for what ever it is that they did not leave in good time to get to where they need to be ,
driving any vehicle should be a relaxed and enjoyable experience shared by all ,,
road rage takes away that experience and i should imagine adds to stress and anger and in some cases people actually try to cause harm or injury to anyone that gets in their way,,prime examples of this are brake checking other vehicles which is extremely dangerous not only to the car that is being brake checked ,but also to other road users , then you have the people who totally lose the plot and try to ram the other driver off the road grrrrr these are the pyschos who should not be in any sort of vehicle ,
then you have the people who vent their anger by throwing objects at other vehicles as they are driving ,,
and all this goes on in every day life ,24 ,,7 .. the roads are becoming like a fair ground ride , like the bumper cars or dodgems as some people know them,
i have personally been slowed down by cars as the road comes to a incline ,and they obviously know that a truck can not just pick up speed like a car , so it is like they get a kick out of making your journey a tad harder ,,
but i have never been brake checked and being totally honest if it had happened then i would not have braked hard and put others in danger ,so the vehicle that brake checked me would have truly known about it ,,
ah you may say that this would amount to road rage ,,nope not at all this would amount to self preservation ,
in the balkan countries and also russia cars that brake check trucks get rammed of the road ,,,the reason being truck hijacking was a serious problem in these countries for many years ,and in some cases still is , hence the truckers take no chances what so ever ,,
eastern european truckers all carry cb radios and are constantly looking after each other and will help out any one stuck beside the road with in reason of course ,,,
happy driving folks and if a hot head honks his or her horn then just smile to yourself and think it is better to have that nutter in front of me rather than behind me ,,,,

It's been a week...

It's been a week and I've lots more to do.
The car has more than 1,000 miles on it... not new now. Synthetic oil is standard and rated for 10,000 miles between changes. I'll get my first oil change next week and most likely change every 5,000 miles.

Four more years, four more years...
I caught pieces of both conventions and while I turned down the sound on Trump, I did read some of his captions. I lost count of the partly true or completely untrue statements. What I think doesn't count. It's what happens on election day... or in the case of mail-in, what the tally of the votes are.

Saturday and I'm headed to the showroom. Not my favorite duty but I'm up this weekend.

More reading on the car manual as time permits, I'm part-way through some switches and buttons. There's a switch for sport mode and the speedometer changes color to red. I need to verify if I can change the mode when the car is moving.

This car is insane!

At this years Goodwood Festival of Speed, Volkswagen unleashed the ID. R. It is a fully electric prototype vehicle designed as part of Volkswagen's I.D. Project, and included within Volkswagen's R series of cars designed specifically for competing in motorsport events. It is the first electric racing car designed by Volkswagen.

The power comes from two electric motors, located at each axle, allowing for a combined 507 kW; 689 PS (680 hp) and 649 N·m (479 lb·ft) of torque. The I.D. R weighs under 1,100 kg (2,500 lb) and has a 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) time of 2.25 seconds.

It's seriously fast, as this video shows:

Besides Goodwood, the I.D. R holds the record at the Nürburgring. It went round in 6 minutes 05.336 seconds, demolishing the record set by the NIO EP9. The NIO took a slow 6 min 45.9 seconds to get round the Ring, even though it has 1,341 horsepower. That means, that the NIO has 661 horsepower more than the I.D. R, and still it was slower. It was also heavier than the I.D. R, which is why it was slower.

It's amazing what we can achieve with electric cars now!

Keyfob aka the lump in my pocket...

My car is equipped with a keyless entry system. To make it work, I have to have the keyfob remote entry transmitter with me. I approach my locked car, put my hand in the door handle and it unlocks the car. It's programmable that only the driver's door unlocks or I can specify the other doors also unlock.
This keyfob is 4 times larger than the one on my previous vehicle, probably because it has more technology packed inside. If I want to leave the car running and run into the store for something... forgetaboutit, the car begins to beep letting me know that the keyfob is out of range. Actually, it beeps if I step out to open the hatchback. That feature is on my list of annoying safety features.
I always keep my keys with me as I learned from a coworker's trouble many years ago. He had a habit of leaving his keys everywhere but his pocket. Assigned to a project where he could leave his tools overnight. The keys were on the top of his rolling toolbox. He and his helper were the last out of the building that evening. The door locked behind them and no way of reentry. Realizing the keys were inside, he panicked. They had to go to a pay phone to call me and I was lucky enough to get security to unlock the building for him to retrieve his keys.
I'm not liking the lump as all my keys are on it, but I haven't figured an alternate way around it.

Marmalade

I am your Marmalade
A little sweet and a little tart
I am your little tart
Marmalade

I slip under your covers
While you sleep
Nuzzle close
Will you dream of me?

On sleepless nights
I will bring you dreams
In my mouth, I will bring them
Would you wake and take them?

I am your Marmalade
A little sweet and a little tart
I am your little tart
Marmalade

Heels

On the heels of jeopardy
Let it not bite
As little dogs whine at turned toes
Upon cigarettes, lit
And sorry cries from jowls on high
Bring tears from bowel afire
Sweet love’s desire
Fan the fires
Of makeshift forts filled with love’s
Desire
On empty fields, spread wild flowers
Take one breath, traded by the hour
To fill empty rows with blossoms, bloom
Take my heart and join with your
Tomb

Beach comber

Come with me to the beach
Comb sands and comb me
I am your sandy shore
With shells
Shall you see me?
On windy shores
My hair sweeps toward fingers
Ready to part my waves
Pull me to you
My blonde locks ready to
Unlock dreams from distant
Ocean's
Waves, of blonde
Spend hours combing my hair
You'd make me drift
Heavy lids draw you within
As your fingers pull my heart strings
Comb my hair on a sandy beach

Engineer Mountain

Iron shoes tap into the
Trailhead
At the base of Engineer Mountain
I looked up, daunted
My mare, confident
Together we crossed meadows
Through raining Aspen leaves
Taking rest by a trout's creek

My girl's mouth worked the bit
While I leaned towards a granite face
Prepared to launch vertical
Towards heaven, my heart, still far below
We climbed
It felt as if I rode the ocean's waves
My body tossed higher and higher
With every lunge

I dared not look down
As my horse did have wings
We touched hanging clouds that once
Moved steadily above me
Together, a beast carried me with
Courage
Beyond the tree line
Into the sky
On Engineer Mountain my mare did fly

Mind

My eyes fixate on hazel gems
That crown a smile, broad and tender
With words that warrant a
Return to sender
Consideration for an invitation to my
Chamber

Welcome to my eccentric dwelling
To my taste would you be willing?
Have a seat and use those eyes
And view my collage of images and words
Nothing bland in this world of mine
Once you have visited my mind

Part

I took him inside of me
Willingly
And now he will always be a part of me

Nothing grew except an experience
Willingly
And now that will always be a part of me

I don't know if I wish for
Amnesia or old memories
For the part that will always be a part of me

moon

he is like a succulent fruit
irrigating furrows of dusty plains
that once gushed greenery thick and rich
my eyes tear up at the memories of
ravenous meals made of moans and squeals
sweet meats of yore
filling more than bellies
i cried out for the stars
mapping big dippers and f*ck whippers
the lot not enough
as if my void was limitless
like the sky
and if i could be his constellation
i would capture his Milkyway with spoons
cast by greedy hands
and bathe my flesh with warm white happiness
spilled from his generous fountain
illuminated by the moon's smile upon ripe
pore's open mouths
hungering for a sip of heaven

blanket

let me be your blanket
i will cover you and keep you warm
i will wrap myself around you
become your layer of skin
and i will feel your heart's loving song
sing to me
let us share our bodies
and turn lonely shivers into
warm embraces while gazing at
long lost faces
listening to beloved voices
speaking words of love
in your bed
i will be your blanket

Number one twin....

...and I drove up to Nissan dealer in the car we got her for graduation, and her new job. Internship, well paid, at a national lab. Studying how non -random is meoitic chromosome recombination, under environmental influences, in rodent embryotic stem calls. Simple shite, that. These vehicles are amazing for those of us who drive antiques. Visit was for no charge dealer service to update programs for the posterior wieseldink release valves, and the central imposivator coupler. These cars do everything but scratch your nose. Which was my complaint to the service manager, who agreed. Chinese buffet after it all, long evening on the toilet. But over two hours on the road, got to listen to Millennial rock. K and J Pop, and lots more. Can't say I hated it, but can't say I loved this stuff either. Like my first beer---takes getting used to. Now, one thousand are not enough, and one is too many.
