Coming to a street near you, and probably yours also.

Its possible to zoom in and view your home at close
quarters.

Do you think this is an invasion of our privacy?

dunno

Those views aren´t current and can be as much as 2 weeks old depending on the last time a satelite passed over... so I really don´t see it as a tool for burglers...or as a true invasion of privacy...

Hi tam, i think it's all about a potential burglar being able to zoom into a particular area or home if you like to see if anyone's at home. I had read something about it a few months ago. Here's a link from the guardian to explain more:

Yes to invasion of privacy but not sure its of much use to criminals. I would also like to know the percentage of crimes cleared up by CCTV cameras, as the UK has more cameras than any other country. They are an invasion of privacy too.

You may be right & i could have got my stories mixed up but i remember seeing something about how it has become easy for potential criminals to target your home by looking live on line. Hopefully not many people know how to do it.

Hi jbwave

This is a new feature from google. Not satalite
pics. Taken from ground level, 360' pics allow
you to pick your spot and zoom in.
Give it a try...I just had a look at the Green
Tortoise Hostel in SF.

Unless they pay to subscribe...then they can get an accurate and current view any time, and keep an eye on a certain neighborhood or home. And the government certainly can do this.

Yes, I feel it's an invasion of privacy.

Well I´m obviously behind the times on this stuff!!!! I´ve always had a problem with CCTV cameras and this is another step in the wrong direction.... George Orwell was just a couple of decades off...uh oh

No, I don't. I've looked at my whole neighborhood using streetview, including my apt. Not only is the view about 3+ years old, the only thing you can see is the same thing you'd see driving by. You can't see into windows, or even open doors for that matter. Yes, you can zoom in twice, but that just makes the picture blurry. If this somehow constitutes invasion of privacy, then so should everytime someone drives past your house and looks at it. roll eyes

I guess like everything, it has its advantages and disadvantages.
But yes, there will be others who will use it for the wrong reasons.

I love Google Earth and it's mapping abilities. I use it all the time. When I am travelling in my RV it allows me to see ahead.

I used it a lot when I buying a home. I want to be able to see everything close to the home I am consider buying. I love it to find golf courses in the area where I am vacationing.

It very useful to see where water is located in my community because hurricanes will flow in any river, creek or low area to get to your home.

I like going back and look at homes I used to live in and what the neighborhoods look like today.

Only part of the uk is covered at the moment Trish.
Doesnt go as far as Stockport.laugh

Anyway, as much as I enjoy using G/Earth, Maps
and now Street View, there's no doubt these
could be used by people with perhaps dubious
intentions.
A combination of all three certainly gives a lot
of information about the place where you live.
It doesnt take much imagination to see how
valuable this could be to the unscrupulous.
For many different reasons.
