Big_John: I workout 3 to 5 times a week at the gym. I normally spend about 1 1/2 hours at each session. I also do power walks, hikes and ride my bike. Hell what else does a retire guy have to do?
toranoga: I do weights 2 days on, 1 off, crunches and circuts 3 days on, 1 off and ride my bile weather permitting 7-10 miles/day, but still have a hard time keeping it tight. Any ideas?
buzzy: You can workout till your eyes turn blue and recieve little results. 85% of weight loss are your eating habits. That will dictate how you look and feel. Exercise is important, but not as important as what you eat and when you eat. Start getting books on eating life styles and find the right one for you. I work out with light weights three times a week, and walk briskly 1 to 2 hours a day. In four years I went from 270 lbs to 210, where I am now. I consume about 1,000 calories a day. Your internal organs work harder the more you eat and what you eat. There fore they waer out quicker. The book, "Fit for Life" explains how we are made and what is best for us. It was a real eye opener for me. Remember, YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT. Good luck in your efforts.
I agree with this Buzzy. Everyone needs to balance diet and excerise over a long period of time to be healthy. All excerise doesn't have to be in a gym either. Just an active lifestyle works well also.

I see people spend gobs of money on gyms and recieve little benefit. So they quit and go back to old habits. Their trainers will tell them about healthy eating, but it seems that is the hardest thing to change. The change has to happen over time, or the body revolts. It took you years to get where you are, it will take time to reverse it. Patience is require and that takes inner strength, which many do not have.
takeit4granted: that was in vegas 2 weeks ago,,great trip,,a ride up into devils canyon,,hoover damn. I work in the baking industry,,,to many delicious temptations
toranoga: I already eat those at least once a day, plus eggs, yogurt, etc. Hate to eat the same things over and over. I coach some and have taken sports nutrition classes, but those are all heavy on read meat.
New studies on dairy products, not good for us. Nuts are the best sourse of protien.
toranoga: I farm and do a lot of hard physical hand work in the summer and even though I eat a lot of fruits and veggies, I have never been able to get the energy I need on a vegitarian diet. During the summer I eat about 4000-4500/calories and still lose some weight. Got any Ideas for at least reducing meat other than protein drinks?
I work out regularly. Most of the emphasis has been on weight-training, with a smattering of aerobic stuff thrown in (walking and cycling). I have a gym in one room - consisting principally of a weight machine I designed and built. I do the usual bench presses, pullups, squats and so on, with a lot of weighted situps and leg-lifts thrown in.
Well let's see. If doing the dishes, cleaning the house, taking care of the kids, lugging the wash up and down the basement steps, running EMS calls, lifting people up to 400lbs on a stretcher into the back of an ambulance, lugging medical equipment that ways a ton in and out of houses, counts as exercise, then YES, several times a day.

toranoga: Who workout at home, or the gym, how often do you work out and what works for staying fit? Getting rid of the love handles, butt bulges, building biceps, etc.!
Yup! Its pretty much become a way of life! 3 to 4 miles on a treadmill at least 5 days a week. Alternate weight workout for arms and chest one day; other day crunches, leg lifts, and pushups. Incorporate those with the treadmill. Now that spring is here, trying to put on about 10 miles /day 5 times per week weather permitting. Gotten to the point that I just don't feel good unless I DO work out. Weird!!!!!!
I was working out regularly...right now I have a leg injury preventing me from going for my normal workout, but when weather permits, I'm walking at least. I also do stretching daily.
I also watch what I eat, and am slowly making changes in my diet. Eventually my goal is to be eating about 60-70% raw fruits and veggies, and the other 40% to be low-fat, lean meats and cooked vegan dishes. (Vegan dishes because they can't have dairy, I'm lactose intolerant...but I don't believe in cutting meat and fish completely out of my diet, either. I call myself a carne-vegan, and not as a joke, but as a serious lifestyle.)
I'm making changes for my overall better health for life, not weight loss. I just know that will be a side benefit, and will take time. I've lost 40 lbs already in a year, and I feel better...but I don't worry about the scale. I go by how my clothes fit, and how I feel.

Neither is gluten. Gluten is found in all normal wheat and grain products, and is also found in many other foods like salad dressings, as a binder. The side effect of eating it in some people is to have it slowly kill off the villi in the digestive system, which makes it so that food and nutrients aren't absorbed like they should be.
