In the US, we get old "freedom" this, "freedom" that line ad nauseum, but how free are we really?
We're tied down by financial obligations (mortgage, taxes, property, family), and most importantly the fact that we have to have jobs to keep us afloat. Few of us manage to get to the point of packing it in and going where we want to go or do as we really please.
Would you know what to do with yourself if you weren't tied down by anything at all (short of the Feds wanting their taxes); if you were really free to do as you please with reasonable means would you be happy?
Would you get bored? Would you want "some" ties to feel as if you have a "home"? or would you be content to be a "citizen of the world"? Could you handle being truly free?
I am basically free. I own my home, I own my car and I own my neighbors dogs. What I must pay are taxes and utilities, basically. I never get bored. So what do I do with myself? I look for someone that I can get tied down with!

Yup I can handle it as I have been free the past two years. I am able to live on very little money and I have been traveling around the States helping out my family and friends with things they need done all the while attending college for my degree and everyone I know is available online or via cell phone.
My wish is that being able to be a world citizen was in fact possible but moving between countries is very difficult in todays world especially. It would be very nice to be able to get some kind of all round pass that would be recognized by as many countries as possible so one could easily relocate country to country without spending a year or more getting permissions etc just to have to do it all over again.
Get me that freedom and I indeed would become a citizen of the world as quickly as possible. As for getting bored?? oh heck no, but would I like to have a traveling companion?... without a doubt.

I take it you mean no children, no pets, nothing at all to tie you down in any way? No, I wouldn't want that at all. Even when my sons are grown and living their own lives, I will have pets, so I'll always have ties to a home.

I know I would certainly enjoy myself.... And wow...I think that's just awesome Shed....all of it....
Interesting to read everyone's perspective. Thanks.
I think I've managed to be as free as one can be (can't outrun the IRS unfortunately) but I've also encountered quite a few people who are perplexed when I tell them that I have no "home." (by choice!). That, more than anything seems to be peoples' foremost concern - having a home-base, some place to go to, a place where they have roots... and I find myself wondering: why is that? is that our nature? or is it environmental? It would seem to make sense if one is of child-rearing age, but then when one's past that stage, is it still important? ... why?...hmmm....

I am retired and truly have no financial obligations that tie me down. I have been very lucky in life! So your real question is for someone like me do I get bored. The simple answer is no.
I worked years getting to a point where I had the financial ability to retire; however, I had read many, many books and articles about after money, what then? When you wake up the day after retiring what are you going to do with the rest of your life. So I went abut studying how I was going to live in retirment.
It took me two years to figure out the life I wanted. Since I retired three years ago I often wonder how I ever had time to work. My days are filled from sunrise to the time I go to bed. I have filled my life when things I love to experience. If you read my profile you will see me!
Do I want some ties that bind? The ones I have I have choosen to keep in my life.

I'm not free IMO.
I'm not allowed to cuss on my ham radio, or walk around outside naked, or drive drunk, or not pay taxes and fees for everything.

I'm free to do what I want.Always have been, always will be. At the moment I've given up some freedom to take care of mums for a while. So if I have to choose between love an freedom I've made my choice.Freedom you can always fight for,you can't force love.
