I'm a newbie too, Tainogirl - so let's stick to our principles and try to have a discussion!
My own feeling is that extremist groups of any kind, be they religious fundamentalist (Islamic, Zionist, Muslim, Hindu - whatever you like), political extremist (nationalist, communist, whatever) have a lot more in common that it would superficially appear. They all want to polarise opinion, and so any change will be interpreted at its extremes and exploited.
Let's assume for a moment that McCain had won instead of Obama. The US right wing extremists would probably have used this as well - calling him too moderate, too liberal, too old etc. etc. The Islamic fundamentalists would have had a hay-day - the US stays under conservative government, therefore they are about to invade the rest of the world... blah...blah... blah. Extremists will turn any change to their own advantage by trying to demonise the majority/moderate view, whatever that may be.
Obama puts the extremists under pressure. His appeal is too broad, at home and overseas. He's too reasonable, too conciliatory, too competent (at least, so far!). There's not much there to attack from withing the US other than his colour - so that's what they'll go for. For the Islamic extremists - he's probably their worst nightmare - he wants peace with the Islamic world. Not great for their recruitment purposes. It may not be a total coincidence that the Taleban are on the moving Pakistan.
Extremists march to their own drum, and don't care too much who's in power in a democratic system, because democracy in itself is the enemy, as far as they are concerned. "Extreme" is, by definition, on the edges of the mainstream, and won't have mainstream support.
I don't think Obama is any more likely to be assassinated than George W Bush was (there were plenty of people on this side of the pond who'd have been happy to take a pot shot at "W", as well as a fair few over there!) but I think he will attract some pretty colourful rhetoric.

He has a big job ahead of him, and the american people should stand behind him, no matter what his nationality ! And. The extremist should abice by the laws of this country, or buy a ticket to. tainogirl: I'm hoping this thread will spark some interesting 'DEBATE' as opposed to the usual bickering I usually see in any thread that seems to have Obama's name in it. I came across this article in newsweek online. In a nutshell it was asking whether with the economy being in bad shape and a black(mulatto) in the white house whether there would be a rise in activities from extremist groups. What are your opinions? Here is the link:
I hope everybody keeps a cool head. The people here (Nation's Capital)have mixed feelings. I grew up here, and nobody here is concerned about his race, we just want him to keep his promises.

Yep,"This Side Of The Pond" has a pretty good History of that Thing!
I always like to hear about Extremists, especially that implied "Rightwing"! Well, those Extremists (Leftwing Idiots) give my Hometown Police 12 hours of Running Battles, plus Destruction of Property. All a Gift for May-Day to Zurich by those Numbnuts. Same happened in other Cities around Europe. Go ahead, trust those Dorks with your Life.
amelia7: this whole post completely ignores this request: I'm hoping this thread will spark some interesting 'DEBATE' as opposed to the usual bickering .....
Uhm, it was an intelligent post Amelia, and having lived here for 41 years and being a former Liberal, I have to say he's right.
lerald: Funny how liberals all think that Fox news is the only biased news channel. Yet they won't ever admit that NBC, ABC, CNN, MSNBC Headline news, CNBC, Comedy Central, Pbs and Npr are all liberal biased. Yet it's even more funny that Fox news gets better ratings than MSNBC, NBC, CNN and ABC combined.
Yup. They always point out fox news all the while conveniently forgetting that 90% of ALL media is left-leaning-especially NPR, which recieves part of it's funding from taxpayers and part from the BBC.
Meaning what? That these groups exist? Of course they do-in all countries. The point is whether or not their growing because of O's election. Their not-most of them grow if and when government begins to turn left-e.g. whenever there's a demo in office who invariably grows the size and invasiveness of government.
