I'm hoping this thread will spark some interesting 'DEBATE' as opposed to the usual bickering I usually see in any thread that seems to have Obama's name in it. I came across this article in newsweek online. In a nutshell it was asking whether with the economy being in bad shape and a black(mulatto) in the white house whether there would be a rise in activities from extremist groups. What are your opinions? Here is the link:

It's not surprising that there would be a rise in activity of extreemists groups but it is quite sad.

The article you posted gives a pretty good insight to the newer methods these groups are starting to use. They wont really say they hate different races. Rather they say they do these things because they love whites. Kinda dumb when one thinks about it because I believe most people will see it for what it is. Hopefully their recruiting efforts fail.

tainogirl--I think the sophistication of these groups is a reflection of the times; terrorist groups are also getting more sophisticated. The way they function, manipulate, recruit, etc., is inhanced by better technology and by media savy.

As far as the Obama presidency inspiring a stronger reaction amonst those who hate anyway, it's possible. I expect, and hope, to see him work to bring people together. It's people who feel disinfranchised who get angry and resentful. It's an additional task to an already overwhelming job, but he needs to make sure that everyone, no matter what race, ethnicity, etc., feels they are recognized and valued in our society, even if they are not technically a minority. I'm sure he realizes he needs to bring people together. There will always be those who hate him, no matter what, simply for being black, and/or a democrat. One of his tasks is to make sure those people don't have fodder for recruiting anyone who may be borderline. I am excited and hopeful about this administration. thumbs up

I read the article and honestly, I didn't get much out of it. So there are people who don't like other people. That's really not anything new.

Their right to free speech is as good as anyone elses. Now if they "act" on it, that's a different story. Did they say how many right-wing military were involved (as the Obama Admin has inferred)?

You hear similiar hate speech from the left...it's just glossed over.

Hard to say. I don't think Obama's race will trigger any significant rise in activities from extremist groups these days. But his ideology and the economy might. I think it depends on how extreme the Obama administration becomes with all the Left wing apologizing for America, the Socialism, the government regulations and whatever else the Democrat Administration, Democrat Congress, and the Democrat Senate try to force on the other 48% of the Americans who voted Conservative.

And I have noticed, during the Bush years, there was an extreme amout of venom sent towards President Bush's administration, even though the economy was growing. I hadn't seen so much hatred and intolerance towards a Presidential administration probably since Watergate. Left wing extremist groups such as Acorn, sprang up during Bush's term, but unless Obama really tries to force the country into Socialism, I wouldn't expect too much extremism.

Kind of an example of Left Wing media bias, that that Newsweek decided to post the question.

bradlee: Fox news strikes again! They can't possibly be biased

Funny how liberals all think that Fox news is the only biased news channel. Yet they won't ever admit that NBC, ABC, CNN, MSNBC Headline news, CNBC, Comedy Central, Pbs and Npr are all liberal biased. Yet it's even more funny that Fox news gets better ratings than MSNBC, NBC, CNN and ABC combined.

Has it ever occured to you that American news and American reality and perspective is not the only thing in this world. There are news chanels from other countries who also have a perspective on world events, and the Obama presidency is extremely important in world events. Fox news and it's perspective is probably the antithesis of the perpective projected my most other news chanels around the world, which mean, if all the other news chanels in America have a similar view to each other but a different view to Fox, and most if not all of the chanels around the world have a similar view as CNN, NBC, etc., means Fox is kind of out there, and kind of a minority view.....so, therefore, most of the rest of the world is unfairly biased .... but not Fox new?

OK.

Other than what I wrote about the variables that I thought could trigger extremists, I don't think there is very much to debate.

I don't think race is much of a factor. Conservatives would be happy to have a black man as President if he promoted traditional American values. So the concern is not race in my view, it is ideology and values. I think Conservatives are upset about Obama's ideology, not his race.

I'm finding this debate quite interesting. I've tried deliberately to keep out of this one - why? Because if its one thing I've learned is that too much talking can often lead to not enough listening. From what I've gathered so far there seem to be two schools of thought. Those that say that they don't forsee any real change in extremist activitees, more like business as usual and those who says that there seems to be some evidence to support the oppposite. So what is the reality? Seems the media is also polorizes as well. So which of the news houses is telling the truth? And another thing, being non- american and all I would appreciate if someone would explain to me what exactly are these 'American family values'?
