I have been browsing Italy, because I love it.

And since I watched the movie, 'Under the Tuscan Sun' I have wanted to move there.

As I know am retiring from teaching in 11 days, yikes, I getting scared now, but will be based here as I still have employment at the school.

But I have this dream of buying a house in Italy and renovating it and I was talking to my Danish friend and she sent me details of houses for sale in Italy and there is a beautiful one that I want and I want it now.

I have a bit of spare cash and I can get the funds from my bank to buy a property overseas and I have fallen in love with Sardinia.

Anybody been? I have requested the details for the house and I want to go and see it over the summer. It needs some work, no it needs alot of work which I don't mind, I can find a translator to help me with the paperwork.

I am thinking out loud here, I will be working once a month for the next year and my children are self sufficient now, something I must do.

Opinions friends?

I'm kinda biased, Sommer, but I can say that it's obvious you can't wait to start exploring your options. No, I have nver been to Sardinia, but naturally I am poised to google.

A fabulous idea to buy a property in Italy. About 6yrs ago, you could buy entire villages plus the village bell tower, for next to nothing, as they were simply being abandoned.

How wonderful that you will be retiring from having to work full time. I'm sure you know how to obtain the advice you need in terms of all the paperwork.

I will explore similar options when I am there. Just last night, the deal was signed on my commercial property for a 2+3 yr lease, something I had planned last year.

How exciting, Sommer!

I truly agree with you about Italy, it is the best location ever to spend the rest of you life there,,, nice weather, landscape and also interesting people head banger they are such energetic people and if you manage to gain their interest you will be considered as part of the family, so good luck,, handshake

However, IMHO, I have never been to Sardinia but I have some idea about such islands. It is heart capturing to visit but not to live at. Somewhere on the road while living there, you will feel Surrounded roll eyes and visitors are few to come by,,,

So if you are planning on writing books and enjoying privacy,, then this should be your choice but remember writers only live there until they complete their books grin

So, let me tell you about my kind of town in Italy. it is not that far away from Sardinia,, It is called Portofino, at the north west coast of Italy, stationed strategically between french riviera and Venezia and south of Milano. the best part is that it is located just close to the long road that stretch from Italy to Spain right on the Mediterranean coastline. superb landscape that will always guarantee a daily date with breath taking sunset. Active life of visitors and rich in culture including the most delicious Italian cuisine "Lazania is my favorite love "

anyway, if you have somebody with you then any place is a paradise and both of you can make the best of it and the best decision,,
let me just say "lucky him moping "

grin tongue

wishing you the best

salam peace

YOu dropped into my my head as I was writing this, Ven.

I have thought about it since I first moved here and I now own no property solely.

I am looking forward toworking part time and having some time for me and of course my relationship.

My father retired at 52, which I thought was too young, but I now look at him and think, yes I am doing the right thing.

My income and my work is set for the next five years and I can plan and do something while I am still young enough to enjoy it.

Hi voyager.

I will look at your suggestion, I am open for anything at the moment, Tuscany (Ven!!!) has been the place where I would love to have a place to escape to.

I am not looking to live there permanently, just a place to escape to, I have my apartment here in Salzburg and this, as it has been, will be my main base.

I do like the quiet life these days, I have done the patying and led a busy life, moving countries, often and I would like to settle now and have my will be my final home.

well, I truly wish you the best but you have to consider the facilities and services availability too dunno

you see, either we like it or not, with age health issues will arise and accessibility would be essential, I did not wanted to say that out loud but I truly care for you to make that included in your decision, I am doing it, even though that I don't like the results but what else can I do,, dunno

Tuscany??? too much inland sister roll eyes

I like coastal locations especially west side, where I can see the sun taking a dip into the sea,

cool

So if they struggle to see Liguuria as better than, then Sardinia is the better option?

Or are you saying the opposite? confused

I am saying Sardinia is better than Liguria according to most Italians .. people that go there year in, year out ... I've only been to Liguria and not Sardinia, so | can't speak personally though. Their choice would be beween Sicily and Sardinia .. Sicily if you want typical tourist resorts ... Sardinia if you want open spaces, unspoilt beaches and clear blue sea ..

Was the way I put it really confusing? .. Soz ... maybe too much grappa

Hello voyager,

I was with my cousins in Tuscany last Sept, and Patrizia works as a nurse in ER at the nearby hospital in a town near Florence. They lack for nothing, and told me that in Italy whether you are a citizen or foreigner, you have access to the same quality medical service. In the small town where I was born further south, I was stunned to know they have a 24hr medical service, plus ambulance at all times. I was impressed.

As an expat now with dual citizenship, I am well covered, and I have the top level travel insurance when I am over there, as any would. As Sommer has said she does not intend to live there year round, she would be well covered in the event of any health issues.

But you do raise important points on the need for people to take good care in any such decision making.
