OK, so I'm an idiot. No comments from the peanut gallery on that one. I just got Vista and so...I don't know where everything is. I was going thru some files and saw a whole list of "activity" and assumed it was the history. I deleted it, and followed-up and emptied the trash can. Well, awhile later, I realized that I had just deleted almost 500 pictures!! I deleted vacation pictures, my Daughter's graduation, etc.... I am so frustrated. I deleted the pictures out of my camera awhile ago so that is not an option. Is there some way to recover deleted files?? I saw some software online for sale. I really don't want to spend money. Just want my pictures back! Help!
Yes take it to a (computer doctor) repair shop.... and they will bring it back for you... it is still sitting in your hard drive..... Nothing is ever really deleted.... A friend of mine did the same thing by accident, and he was able to get it back.....
OK, thank you....but isn't there something I can do at home? Some kind of trick? Without spending money? I have spent a lot of money lately on computers, I'm not ready to do it again so soon.

I am going to bed but will check back later.
You have an icon in Vista ( by default, top, left portion of your screen, called " recycle bin". Open it and hopefully you wil have found your photos!

Google it .......... maybe there is a way at home , but I think when you delete files the files names and extensions are toast . So, it takes someone with a program to explore dead files ....... hell,,,,,, whatta I know ?

You need a second computer to do the deed and the software does cost money.
Shut off your computer and do not run it again until after the data has been recovered. Every second the computer is running it writes to the drive. The space the files were on WILL be overwritten eventually. Given that Vista defrags all of thetime it might be a better bet to do the data recovery on the camera media providing you have not taken more pictures.
I'd forget about trying to do the job yourself. It is easy to make mistakes the first trip out and you may lose everything.

I hate this VISTA wished I'd never bought it I like my xp. Good luck
If she does not turn it off the files will be over written at least in part. She should have shut down the computer as soon as she realized she had deleted the pictures. Even a few hours running time greatly lowers the chance of getting data back.
Trust me on that I have done quite a bit of data recovery. It is one of the things I do to make a living.
If she has not taken a lot of photos since deleting the pictures from her camera that is still the best bet for recovering the images.
The proceedure is to make an image of the drive or flash media on a second computer then recover the data from that. There are quite a few temporary files made in the process and you can count on at least double the amount of data being written to the drive as you are recovering the data. Between the OS, installed software and document you might be easialy looking at close to 150 GB on her hard drive.

avecaim: I don't get is she supposed to turn her computer on or off?
Me geek computer friend, who has a degree in computer science, said not to turn the computer off until she has run out of options to retrieve her lost pictures.....

Off to protect the traces of the data that is left on the hard drive.
When the files were first deleted very little was changed. Everything was still there but the name had been deleted from the references in th OS and the sectors that the files were on were no longer marked as not being able for writing to the drive.
Right away those sectors were available for use. Temporary files. expansion of the page file or what ever. Add in Vista trying to constantly defragment the hard drive and you have very high odds that something will be written to one of those sectors.
Had she sut it down right away it would have been very simple to recover all the photos.
Listen to Bruno! Turn off the computer & let a professional recover your data.
Keyword here is DATA... this is not a simple back track for program recovery, this is data recovery & it requires a person who can read file extension names & things of that sort.
15 yr audio visual experience speaking here... sometimes a pro is the best idea. Do it yourself only gets you so far unless you've be trained in "computer". Don't do more damage!!!
