Kattsrose: Is anyone else growing a garden this year?

I'm hoping to plant a few things this month, just as soon as I know for sure whether I'm staying where I am or not. I'd like to plant some tomatoes, squash, peppers and some flowers too.

It's gonna be a HOT summer!

Already started.
Have onions, corn, lettuce, greenbean, radishes and beets.

I have no idea what will grow though. This is really my first actual attempt at this.
Last year I only planted carrots.

Ok, seriously...I have planted a type of squash, from Africa, incredibly tasty, with deep yellow flesh....this thing has been growing gang-busters, just exploding...but now it is showing two types of baddies...I think it's mildew, and then white spots on top of the leaves....I've had to chop off half the growth, and I think I'm gonna lose it...what can I do??...crying

How are peoples gardens & seedlings doing?

I lost some of the tomatoes to damping off but the survivors along with the peppers and broccoli are coming along nicely.

Some of the tomatoes have flowers on them. We are going to keep one or two of the hot pepper plants as a house plants. If one is bearing at Christmas time it can be our tree.

I'm growing zuchinni and tomatoes in rubber maid bins with holes drilled in the bottom. I used dirt, fertilizer, foam pellets for drainage, and miracle gro. I don't have a clue what I'm doing except that they're thriving.

For the first time ever I have decided to grow a garden. I have some tomatoes, chili peppers, squash, red cabbage and collard greens! These are all good to combat cancer (especially the collard greens) I am already munching on the collards in my daily vegetable soup!

Wooooee!

Something (a worm or bug) is attacking our broccoli but we have not seen them yet.

katt1017: Something (a worm or bug) is attacking our broccoli but we have not seen them yet.

My mom used to grow vegs. I seem to have a really gross childhood memory of finding little green worms in our garden grown brocolli or asparagus. I found them in the boiling pan. It was really really gross.
My tomato plant has one tiny green tomato on it, and the zuchinnis are flowering. I know I'm supposed to pollinate by jabbing the male flowers into the female flowers but the flowers are never open. I'm not sure if ripping the petals off will damage the plant or not. Wondering if they open at night like little orange vampire flowers or what.
I was trying to start chives in peat pellets. They didn't do really well. I figured out that pre potted plants are the best. So, I got the chives in the produce section of Jewel, re potted them, and now they're getting huge. Chives must be hard to start but once they like your soil in your yard, they grow like weeds.
