I have seen a few threads on here about Smoking and how offensive and Anti Social it is to others.
I was watching a TV programme about the effects of drinking on society. It showed people throwing up in the streets, fighting, police involvement leading to court action and the pressure it places on ER depts to the extent they have had to increase security to keep the medical staff safe at the peak time on weekends. There is then the cost of illness's caused by drinking ( as in smoking)
The programme was in the UK, and i know when i go home i would not go into town at the weekends, because of the trouble caused by excessive drinking.
Personally, i find excessive drinking more Anti Social than Smoking.
Smokers do seem to get a hard time of it but drinkers are never mentioned
Just wondered how others felt, and if there are the same problems in other countries.
No argueing please, just an exchange of opinions??

I have a bit of a problem with the term anti-social. I remember hearing it the first time in England some years ago. First it was applied to the council housing crowd, then it was extended to smokers and I guess now it's applies to boozers.
Anything can be classified as anti-social really. To stick with the idea of the post though, I think drinking is far more dangerous and certainly uglier to look at than smoking.
I remember when I was 12 years old and had to go to the Kiosk in the evening to buy something for my parents. At the same time, some guy staggered out of the pub (attached to it), pulled his peter out of his pants, pissed all over himself and the ground in every direction and I nearly puked as this happened no more than 2 meters away from where I stood.
... I don't think that anyone who opposes smoking can come up with examples to top the level of grossness that results from excess alcohol consumption.

:waveIt just puzzles me a little, that some people are so anti smoking, but the horrors of drinking are forgotten about.
My ex son in law was out one night, when he got attacked he has been left with permanent brain damage he can no longer work or spend time with his daughter on his own. The cause was a man that was drunk said 'he looked at him the wrong way'
In the UK it is a real problem in some inner cities, is it like that where you live?

When i lived in Turkey they did drink but never to excess, the only people you saw in the streets and causing trouble were the tourists. Admit i was often ashamed to be British.
Does alcohol cause problems with crime in your country ?
None of us should smoke, including me. I maybe bias from my childhood because of my alcoholic dad but I think drinking is more offensive to the public. This starts in the home and branches out to public streets and highways injuring innocent folks the whole way.

Well, i admit i do smoke, but feel i am not hurting anyone else in doing it, and if i am in company of others that do not, i move away and show some respect for their choice.
What they are now calling Binge Drinking in the Uk is causing so many problems, but they seem to do nothing about it, and in a way actively encourage.
kidatheart: I can roll a joint with one hand, while holding a beer in the other, smoke dangling outta me yap, while talking on my mobile phone, driving a stick shift vehicle in heavy rush hour traffic!
Won't mention the urinating part though, lest someone get offended.
That's nothing!
I can discuss politics while throwing a knife at an escaping mugger while kissing jlb at the same time, drinking a pint from a straw between her teeth, rolling a cigarette, ALL while pissing up against the wall of my favourite pub AND humming the tune to 'The Yellow Rose of Texas' and tap-dancing like Fred Astaire and - how many hands have I got left?

I can do all that AND put on my mascara, fiddle with the radio stations, offer up the odd hand gesture to a passing vehicle, paint my nails, and eat a spanakopita!!!

yeah yeah but I bet you can't piss up against the pub wall too...... not as high as I can anyway - even doing a handstand you can't!

I'm like you Morgan, if I have nonsmokers come in my home and if I feel I HAVE to have a smoke I go to my wood stove, open the door squat down and blow my smoke in the stove. I do the same when my little girls are here just in case there's any truth to the second hand smoke theory. Clinton started the second hand smoke crap and now Obama tax'n the crap out of us smokers here in the U.S.A. I feel if I want to kill myself by smoke'n it's my biz and no one else's.
Back in my drink'n days I know I was a lot more dangerous by drive'n drunk and thump'n the crap out of some drunk in a bar than I am now with my smoke'n.

Well, women are noted as generally being better at multi tasking than men.
I never seem to have a free hand to give gestures, so I just honk the horn.
