Once a month, one of the local churches has Harvest Basket.
Free Groceries purchased from the Food Bank, are given to those in need in our community.

I volunteer with others, sorting the foods and putting them into bags, then into bins, for the next days free shopping.
We all enjoy working together and being a blessing to our community. Today was our work day.

Tomorrow, hundreds of families will be blessed with an entire huge shopping cart filled with food.

Do you have outreaches such as this in your community?

Do you donate your time in this type of service?

Are you a grateful recipient of services such as this?

wave Hi Trish!hug Long time no see!

Of course they have internet access, at least they do in these parts. They are not homeless. There is no requirement of who may receive the food. You just have to show up, wait in line then fill your buggy.

The economy here in Oklahoma is very good. We have the poor among us all of the time. The average income for our state is between $12,000 to $24,000. Lots of country folks who don't make much.

However, many are on fixed incomes, receiving social security.
They pay rent and bills and do not have much left for buying groceries.

Every little bit helps. The free groceries help and enable them to spend money on utilities, gas, diapers, whatever they need, even cigarettes and beer!cheers

I have noticed that many on CS receive disability or retirement checks. Perhaps they receive from a service of this type?dunno

Doesn't it just break your heart to see those in need and not be able to help?crying

You are seeing the difference in the countries gary.
I often wonder if other countries share with those in need as we do here in the U.S., thus the purpose for this thread.

The people here are very giving and compassionate, for the most part. True, as you have stated, in the USA, if you are out of food, there ARE ways to get it. Clothing also! Even Shelter!

Great. I and many others do such acts of kindness without prompting from the church or any religious influence.

That is more genuine in my opinion, but admittedly both achieve the objective. handshake

I know a very poor family who gets food from the food bank and brings it to me, things that they wont eat like canned goods, yams, pinto beans, black eyed peas, cranberry sauce, sliced beets, salmon. I pay them for it so they can buy cigarettes.

You think I'm kidding huh?

I believe you.

I wouldn´t swap food for money for cigs or booze, even if I wasn´t in the fortunate position not to have to put any crap canned or processed food in my body.

You are too soft Tom and going against your beliefs.

I know you have a thing against canned goods which I don't quite understand. I've grown up on canned goods in fact I've done canning myself and it hasn't hurt me. If I didn't take this stuff from them it would probably wind up in the landfill. As for them smoking that's really not my problem and I'd be a fool to make it mine.

I spend time each week volunteering at The Lord Is Our Help soup kitchen. We prepare and serve meals to local people who like to have a hot meal. They are delivered out daily. Then we serve meals to anyone who comes into the facility.

I enjoy this....it remind me that at one time I needed help... today I am able to return the favor.

Yes you do know, but as you say you don´t know why. It´s because canned and preserved food contain often toxic elements in order to maintain its freshness or edibility.

Only fools or lazy people would favour canned food over fresh produce.

Just compare a tin of anything, for example chick peas, with freshly cooked and you will not only taste the difference, you will also not be digesting E numbers or excessive salt and and sugar.

Check out the list of ingredients and additives the next time you buy a tin of anything.

That is great Jan!

I also do the same. I do not know that it would be any more genuine, but it's definitely more personal and can grow into established relationships.hug

I went to an old mans house whom I did not know personally.
Asked him if he needed some groceries.
Took him to my house and went thru the cupboards, refrigerators and freezers only giving him the foods he liked.
Returned him to his house with 8 big sacks of groceries.
He was totally amazed and kept telling me over and over,
"Do you know how much all of this would have cost at the store?"
He was truly grateful.

It is fun, touching the lives of others!

I fed the homeless in Fort Worth, Texas for 15 years.
Yes, they love the hot meals!
We used to sing with them too, it was a great get together we all enjoyed weekly.

They are people too, just like us. Many Americans are only a couple of paychecks away from being in the same predicament.
You never know, it could be YOU!

You are a Blessing to many, John!hug

Once a week I volunteer at the local Methodist church to help with their Angel Food Basket ministry to help give out donated food to those in need. My husband and I donate 10 fully grown steers which have already been processed to the food shelves. I like to bake and donate home baked pound cakes which seem to recieve rave reviews by all who taste them, it's so rewarding to help others. angel yay yay

In Aus, we have a service called Meals on Wheels which is provided by volunteers and aimed mainly at elderly people to ensure that they receive at least one good hot meal every day. Particularly important for people who live alone too, as it ensures that someone calls on them every day and knows how they are doing.
In my local area there is a volunteer-run restaurant, providing meals to the homeless and drug/alcohol dependent people in the area.
Many charitable organizations are also accessible to people experiencing hard times, offering food vouchers and help with utility bills.

thumbs up
