venere08: Yes, I am not disputing all the allegations that have been flying around Berlusconi. No doubt it will be continued to be played out in the courts.

But he is a good statesman when all is said and done.

And a leader. Which is something Italy has lacked for so long.

The far left element are a dangerous lot. They like to detroy, and have nothing constructive to offer.

It has to stop.

I agree with you on this one 100% Venere.

The left wing are the destroyers in every nation. They caused a disaster in the few months they were in power in Italy.

As to Berlusconi being a crook, the Italians have courts of justice too, but till now have been unsuccessful in pinning him down on anything. It is just slime thrown at a person who has not only led Italy through a stable government, but also brought prosperity to a nation that was going to be destroyed by the Communist left....yes in Italy they still have a communist party....long after the demise of communism!! only in Italy!!!

'gradually built up his wealth. You may not like his views, but he's got drive, determination and courage (apart from a hefty appetite for power) to be still working at his age and taking all this flak, when he could easily be living in one of his villas and enjoying the company of his many female television hostesses (what in Italy are called 'soubrette').'

Oh sure Berlusconi was a hard worker. How ignorant are you?

wulfen: Berlusconi really started from modest means. Then wealth generates wealth for those who know how to do it. I don't, so I'm destined to remain a salaried worker the rest of my days, but I surely hold no ill feeling to those who are more successful than me.

Or else do you prefer a communist type of regime where everyone 'shares' equally?

Being modest at the start does not give Berlusconi nor Obama the right to manipulate the media & distort peoples views.

I am NOT a communist! that word is used to stop any questioning of in-equality, i oppose the one-party Stalinist regimes that were in the USSR, Eastern Europe, and those now in China, North Korea & Cuba.

But the gap between the priviledged & poor is widening, that is created by elites everyday. That system cannot continue to grow & could cause mass-suffering

Eh i despise communism & the 'left', but Berlusconi means 'stability' for the elite who exploit everyone else. Stability should mean a more equal balance for all not some banksters. I am delighted that corrupt communism collapsed in USSR/Eastern Europe, but it is right-wing parties that caused this recurrent recession & anyone who qusetions their privileges is condemned as a 'communist' to continue the economic madness. Shame!

I didn't call you a communist mate, was just making an observation.

We may not like it, but capitalism is a by product of a free democratic society. Humans as a species thrive on competition, ambition and goals. Some have these traits stronger than others, not all men/women are created equal.

Just as in sports you have a small number of elite athletes, then a greater number of good athletes, and far more average, and then far more poor ones, so it is in business and any other thing humans apply themselves to.

To put down a guy because he managed to become a multi-millionaire seems 'communist' to me. The fact that he uses his media empire to further boost his image may not be ethically correct, but tell me who is when it comes to matters of power? In his place, had you a media empire at your disposal, wouldn't you use it to further your own career?

Media image is everything in a democratic system, people will vote for the guy they like best, irrespective of what his political goals maybe be. In that case, yes most people are dumb and it is a VERY BIG drawback of a democratic system. It's also why I rarely bother to vote anymore, and follow politics as a neutral observer most of the time. I've found that this has allowed me to see things more clearly than those who are of a particular political leaning or other.

I agree with most of you points but humans won't progress because they also must co-operate, assist to move up-wards. When threatened by a war, crisis or catastrophe most people in a country help each other, rebuild communities. Isolation or competition in times like that is extreme individualism which is what has led to us to the present collapse. I understand why U don't vote anymore, but that's waht happens when 'democratic' parties are guided more by spin-doctors & market advisors than the mass public. But apathy is what elites like.

Great attitude & hard work alone this last year hasn't helped Europe & America's people, many who lose their homes & jobs to speculators. If you think being 'competitive' means shedding peoples careers, then i wish you success because the present capitalism is the most unstable gamble there is
