Maisie: I don't see the point you are making here - they should feel accepted or they are still foreigners? You obviously don't have much time for anyone not born on the island. It sounds like they are barely tolerated but I imagine it's ok for them to spend their money there.

Go brush up on your Maltese history & then speak!! They didn't have to feel alienated because foreigners like them ruled our country & not because the people made them feel like that....
If anyone was treated like an alien and barely tolerated, it was us because we were needed to serve them!!

& one other thing.... I have more than ample time for visitors to our country... but ones who respect the country they're visiting & its people!! Not the kind who are condescending & think they own the place...

As for the name calling......sticks & stones may break my bones... but words will never hurt me!!! Everyone is entitled to his/her opinion.... laugh

RobertC2: Excuse me!

I only like to date nice people.

Your whole tone in your posts is that of a person who is hostile and antagonistic and not the sort of person a nice person would like to date.

Maybe you prefer 'macho' arrogant aggressive men to compliment your aggressive hostile personality..... that is definitely YOUR problem and not mine.

Like I have already said - I perefer to date 'nice', not 'nasty' ladies!

By the way I've dated a VERY nice Maltese lady plus one lady with a Maltese passport but not originally from Malta.

This is a GLOBAL village; if you wish to have a defensive and aggressive attitude to the outside world then you are worse than the former President Bush!

the only kind of man I don't like is those who make a fool of themselves.... in other words... dumb a**hole!!!

Why shouldn't they??? If they intend to make it their home???

If I go to a foreign country, it's expected of me to speak, at least in english....which isn't my native tongue, therefore, if they are here to stay, they SHOULD! Even better for them to feel more @ home.... NO??

Maltese and English are the two OFFICIAL languages in the Maltese islands............... and an advantage to anybody who wishes to get on in the big outside world.

Welsh is only spoken in Wales and Patagonia; Maltese is spoken in Maltese communities in the USA, Australia etc but is (whether one likes it or not) a useful language to learn if you wish to speak with people from other lands.......... an accepted 'lingua franca' in most of the world for business people, politicians, academics and even tourists.

Welcome to the 21st century...... maybe you'd prefer to be under a Soviet regime and have to speak Russian or maybe are waiting until the Chinese take over the world, but (until then) quit whining and bleating about HISTORY!

The choice to learn or not to learn the langauge of a country that one decides to live in is up to the individual. Most maltese speak english and therfore there are no commuincation problems.....that is one of the reasons, in addition to our lovely climate, why foreigners decide to make Malta or Gozo their home.

I agree to an extent, but I really think if people decide to live in a "new" country, they should make the effort to learn the language. I know this is slightly different in Malta, as both Maltese and English are official languages.

We have pensioners from Norway, who whine about immigrants who come to Norway, how do not learn to speak the language. But at the same time, they go to Spain for the winter, or even to live there, and expect to be able to speak Norwegian... and have no interest in learning Spanish...

I have always been rubbish at learning languages, but as I now live in Italy I at least make the effort to not only learn the language but the customs and the culture.
It is only fair that I do.

Raises the question about certain religious groups that want to bring their own customs and culture into a country, though !

Speaking on that subject ..... it pisses me off! I got a sister who is Super Religious in her particular brand of Christianity .......and often I listen to her hypocrisy (doing things that her religion preaches against - actually I find very few "Followers of Christ" actually DO what the Instructions say they should ....... They seem to get more of a kick out of being seen and thought of as "good people" irrespective of how "good" they really are?

Well, anyway, I let her spout off - cause I do things differently and have different strange beliefs probably considered Pagan and Heathen. I can imagine the Theatrical Production that would ensue should I begin to sprout my own personal beliefs!

So ..... those people with different religions should keep their thoughts to themselves, is my opinion. And if they want to force their own beliefs into public domains ....... they should be given a serious warning to Shut Up or Get Out!

Totally agree with you...but then you can't make anyone learn something that they dont feel the need for or that they dont want to.

I have foreign friends who speak the maltese langauge as good (or almost as good as us maltese) but most of these have children who speak maltese. Others understand what is being said but are unable to speak in maltese...but as long as communication is possible....who cares!
