Hi Junie wave

True story - **Sparrer pie's very tasty** I can confirm it IS.

When I was in the mob a national service cockney airframe Mech was doing his time on my squadron and said he worked in Smithfield meat Market. They used to shoot em with air rifles and pistols on the night shift then and said he, like others would pluck and cook em and make pies.

SO - We had sparrer's in the 'angar in Norfolk, so he brought his guns back up to the station the weekend after and the next week when we were on nightshift most of the Erks on the shift had tried his sparrer pies.

The next week when we were in the Ops Pan crew room, the boss and the aircrew knew about it and we even managed to get the boss (Wingco, jockey and an ex engine fitter) plus a couple of the other jockeys and conductors interested too when they saw us eating them.- Javelins have 2 seats (pilot and navigator) - Then several more of us became experts at shootin em and established a decent line of freebies forthose of us who contributed and we were chargin the aircrew a bob a pie. As we had a regular all ranks Piss up once a month it was all recorded and shoved in with that fund as profit was not allowed with the bosses blessing :-)

Well, what a farce. The RSPCA and police went into a house near Hull a couple of days ago and found 50 cats all living in cages with 12 each in. Plus, 20 dogs and a grey squirrel that had also been living in a cage for 7 years.

Anyway, sad thing was the squirrel faced being put down 'cos it wasn't a native here and it's illegal to keep a wild animal in a cage.

However, so many people made a fuss and got petitions etc that it now looks as if he won't be murdered after all applause

Here's the link in case anyone wants to view the bizarre episode.

I don't know what Hull RSPCA are like BUT The local RSPCA branch here in Thanet operates from a place near Manston Airfield and they are a bunch of bloody tin rattling money grabbers. They are all women volunteers who, if you phone and ask for help all you get are excuses as to why they can't do anything.

Our branch have the same reputation. But, at least the cats are all out of the cages now. Was ridiculous the way they were all crammed together in there. No wonder they all looked so bored. wave

The Scottish equivelent of the RSPCA is the SSPCA and they have been very helpful on a couple of occasions when I have rung them. They actually came out to catch and put down two black rabbits that had come into my garden who were suffering from myxomatosis. I just couldn't bring myself to kill them, so I rang the SSPCA, fully expecting them to just laugh at me, as these were wild rabbits, but they didn't...they came out very quickly and put these poor wee souls out of their misery.

The Buddlea are absolutely covered in butterlies just now - they are so beautiful to watch as they are just "perfect" at this point in time. Have anything between 12-20 at any one time, plus a Large White and a Tortoishell.

Anyone got any other species in their garden?

I think I saw a Comma a few weeks ago. They are pretty rare in northern Scotland, but their numbers have been increasing these past few years. Last year, there were quite a few Comma's in the garden.

We had a buzzard circling overhead this afternoon, I had heard its call - and looked up ..... my neighbour, also outside said sometimes there are upto 3 buzzards flying high - so I'll have to look out for them.

My next door neighbours have buddleias too - and I have ice plants (or Sedum) which attract butterflies of all kinds, they love lavendar too, which I have a few bushes of.

Besides the Red Admiral and cabbage white butterflies, I have also seen Orange Tips, and a small pale blue butterfly too - tho I don't know its name.

I know most women, and some men if they were to admit to it, hate spiders ..... for me, the english ones don't bother me

I was settled comfortably on my sofa this evening watching a documentary when out of the corner of my eye, I spotted a large spider run across the lounge floor ..... my old adversary was back again!! I swiftly got up, collected a tissue, and tiptoed over to where he had thought himself hidden behind a plant pot .... then just as I was near him, he darted over to the long curtains and hid there instead.
Pulling back the curtain, I swooped down with my damp tissue and swept him up ...... then hurried to the back door, where I let him go.

I'm sure that darn spider runs round to the front of the house and waits somewhere til I re-open the window before climbing back in.

He (if it is a male), has done this a few times, always waiting til evening before starting his trek ..... he's about 3 inches across including his legs, but I just don't have the heart to kill him .... I'm just a softie at heart I guess grin

RE: small blue butterfly ...I think it may be just called a "Small Blue"? dunno confused (don't know my butterflies too well.

...Yeah, I've got lavender and sedum too, and you're right..they are great for attracting butterflies ...and bees of course! Loads of different bees and small wasps in my garden too just now. I think there may be a wasp nest being made underneath the Leylandii hedge dunno There are loads of small, wasps flying in and out at a certain point, but I can't see a nest. Didn't realise they would build one under a hedge. It is right by a seating area, but they don't seem to bother me at all. They are quite cute really.

RE: spiders. Ohhhhhhh...that story gives me the creeps!! uh oh hole I used to be ok with big spiders until I was in my teens. I remember it to this day.... I was laying in bed with my head on the pillow, as usual, when I realised that something was "on" the pillow right next to my head. When I focused, it was one of those HUGE spiders that you are talking about!!!!!!!!!!! Ahhhhhhhhhhhh! wow uh oh I jumped out of bed and pinged the spider onto the floor, but then spent about 1/2 hour trying to find him to put him out of the window...but he'd disappeared completely! I was REALLY creeped out, but eventually got back into bed and lay there again.

...What happened next you ask??

The very same thing happened, that's what!!! It absolutely freaked me out and I am afraid that that spider got squashed!! Since that day, I have been terrified of big spiders. Some I trap and release, but others aren't so lucky, espcecially if they start charging around the place at break neck speed! uh oh uh oh uh oh My mum's old house in Norfolk was particularly bad. When she was ill and hospitalised last Autumn, I stayed in her 1-bed bungalow for 6 weeks....and found 103 spiders!!!!!!!!!!

Got to think of something else now, as I am just about to go off to bed!!! Not a good story to be writing at bedtime!!! hole hole hole
