I suppose it depends on your perspective. Would I dump an old friend who's going through a rough period merely because it may have a negative impact on me? I doubt it.
My good friends are very old friends, they all have differing personalities and outlooks. Some are in opposition to my own philosophy, however, I can accept the differences without question. I'd always be there to help them.
To me, the above read as possible justification for being a fair-weather friend.
