In response to: What is wrong with these people? Why can't they accept that there is no free lunch? Going on strike is not going to solve their financial problems it will only make it much worse.

I think that it is GWB and America fault. GWB started a war with Sadam Hussien and spent 10b per month there. Greece was not able to get in on the action.....because of its Socialist Gov't refused to join the Bush coalition on Iraq. So Greece lost out on the spoils of the Iraq war.E.G Oil.

Then when the Euro and Dollar exchange went south. American tourists stopped visiting Greece on holiday and vacation. Meaning few US dollar coming in.

Then finally to cap off Greece's financial doom...American bankers protected thier investors by saying the the Greek bonds were headed to junk bond status. So American investment dried up.

Yep it is the American's fault again.......professor ))

I agree with you.... Since independence in the 1830s, Greece has been in a state of default about 50% of the time.

If you don't know that is hardly Greece's fault but rather your own ignorance.
How about George Papanicolaou the inventor of the pap smear for cancer detection in women, a diagnostic test that has saved millions of lives.
Just because a country relies on tourism does not mean they are underdeveloped, and Olives together with Olive oil is huge multimillion dollar business, Have you been to Greece? I have, and not noticed lazy locals, but rather the opposite, people working hard in the fields and I would suggest that the Greeks are famous for their hospitality to foreign guests, working every hour available in hotels etc just to please the tourists, and for a very low wage.
I don't recall hearing anyone working in Sweden who does NOT get holiday pay, I know for a fact that the people who work at Saab get (or got if it has changed) holiday pay. So what is wrong with the Greek people getting the same, most European countries do this.

rizlared: What utter rubbish, at the time you're discussing, every country that had any form of financial system was in exactly the same position, it was still in it's infancy. There was no stable currency, plus much of the financial screwups were created by the invading Christians, the Knights Templar started the first banking system, based on what they had learnt from the Greeks.
The Greeks together with the Romans gave the rest of the world, especially Europe, the strong foundation that enabled us to grow and move forward, you should read YOUR history.
Now we have a chance to repay our debt to this ancient and once powerful country. But the Germans, due to their greed and love of money have been a major stumbling block for the Greek people.

The once great Byzantine Empire existed long before the Crusaders of Western Europe barged into Constantinople. The financial situation was already precarious and Greece proper was a semi independent, mostly self ruling 'province' of that empire. Greeks were not its single largest ethnic nor racial/ tribal group that made up the ruling elite. The Crusaders only made their situation worse in the end. What the Templars learned or set up was only after they got there, not before and is , really irrelevant to the fact that the Greek provinces was a huge drain on the treasury of the Empire. It may have had self governing abilities, but it was never self sufficient to even raise enough to pay for its own troops or equipment, let alone the any garrisons of foreign troops there to help secure its defense from any direction. This was also one of the main problems the Romans had to contend with...Financial irresponsibility is and was endemic there even before the Romans arrived. That is the point. Nothing has been learned by the Greeks in the ways of being financially responsible in all these centuries. Ancient Greece and Rome are totally irrelevant to the financial catastrophes over the centuries of mismanagement and basic irresponsibility.

Well think yourself lucky, in the UK retirement is 67 for men, and most times they need to carry on till 70.
I don't classify Greece as unsuccessful, I do however, agree with the majority of Greeks who have condemned their government for being a major cause to their financial downfall.
The reason Greeks want to retire at 55 is more due to their climate rather than not wanting to work, they have extreme heat in summer, those over 55 have a hard time coping, plus they have not spent 30 years working 9 to 5 but 7 to 9.
If you read the Greek papers you will see they are not blaming other countries but rather the way their government has allowed foreign investment to drag Greece down, together with Germany creating a huge stumbling block regarding the rescue plan but the European Community.

Time the Greeks rolled up their sleeves and realised there is nothing as a free lunch, there are a lot of lazy socialist Greeks, then again the more socialist a country is the more lazy a significant portion of the population is, the government should ban public sector strikes, anyone working in essential services like health, education, defence and air traffic should have no right to go on strike. Also the Greeks need to cough up the taxes that they have been dodging for years which they have been hiding under the mattress, Greece has had corrupt left wing and centrist governments for decades, sure the Greek prime Minister Papandreou's father was crooked as anything.

ooby_dooby: I'm sorry you are suffering. I don't like to see anybody suffering. Nor do I like to suffer but your problems are affecting my country and more specifically ME!
Sure the USA sells arms to lots of countries but we don't go to them with arms catalogues, they come to us. The US isn't the only country that sells arms to warring little pissant countries, Russia and China and a bunch of other countries do too.
Good luck solving your problems but don't kill the goose that lays the golden eggs.

FIRST MUST KNOW YOUR COUNTRY COMES WITH THE ARMS CATALOGUES
SECOND:MY COUNTRY HAVE ONE HISTORY 3000 YEARS (YOURS 520YEARS) SO SAME OF THESE YEARS IT WAS NOT IN ROSE.
ANY KIND OF PROBLEMS WE RESOLVE ALONE ANYTIME IT WILL BE NECESARY
EVEN NOW WE RESOLVE IT AGAIN MAYBE YOU DONT KNOW OR MEET THE GREEK PEOPLE AND THEIR MENTALITY.
BUT YOU DONT UNDERSTAND ONE THINK IN ALL THAT HAPPENS:
THAT IS NOT A GREEK PROBLEM THAT IS FINANCIAL EUROPEAN PROBLEM SO TAKE CARE FOR THE GREEK FLU

ooby_dooby: I don't have a problem with demonstrating as long as it doesn't get out of hand like a post soccer match or result in people getting killed. Having a major strike is not the best way to get out of a financial meltdown. All that does is make the situation worse by stopping people from contributing to the economic health of the country. Nor do I believe these austerity measures be levied on the Greek people without the same belt tightening being applied to the government.
All I'm saying is a strike is a bad idea. Look what unions have done to the UK in years past. I remember years ago it was a strike of the week club in England or so it seemed.

Ridiculous.

It's the west, and particularly the US that has been insisting on a free lunch for decades.

Greece doesn't have trillions of dollars of debt like the US does. But Greece also doesn't have a powerful military. So Greece can't just insist on being given ever more credit, like the US has been doing for decades.

Greece is just the weak point in the overinflated global economic balloon.
The point where it will break.

I totally disagree with you ooby

If it wasnt for trade unions people like you would be on $2 an hour and working 14 hour days !!!!

Dont we live in democracy ???

Employers would pay what they liked and if you didnt like it well tough luck

You only have to look at countries like india where there are no unions and they employ children in sweat factories, working 16 hours a day for a few pennies

Thats what would happen if people were never given the choice

I have worked in industry and believe me i know !!
