What is wrong with these people? Why can't they accept that there is no free lunch? Going on strike is not going to solve their financial problems it will only make it much worse.

Do you understand why these people are rebelling? Sometimes the people need to react against a bad government, The Greeks have had enough of their corrupt government especially as they are now the ones who are being forced to pay even more to bail out the rich cats who stole from them in the first place. To be honest, if I was there I would demonstrate with them

Déjà Vu it all reeks of the familiar. It happens in many countries and many never get back on track

What is wrong with these people? They loose their job, their salary and their pension will be reduced, prices are going dramatically up. They have to pay for the international crisis that followed the US bank crisis. I am not surprised that they don't like that. Would you?

They are probably looking at the cheques for billions of dollars written to help out huge financial institutions, and to make sure very rich people stayed rich. And seeing that they are asking why does the ordinary man have to take a cut in his salary because those fat cats running things fu**ed up the worlds economy!

Well was the original home of democracy. Why should the ordinary person in the street be held responsible for the foibles of a poorly run country economically??

I seem to remember from school,we're been tought history to learn from the past and to improve the future. there was a time nobles lived in castles and peasants were owned by them. they payed 10% of their agricultural profits and the nobles protected them against other nobles aggression in return. nowadays we have earned our freedom, pay over 50% of our income and if an agressor would arouse, we're sent out to deal with them sure we learned our history lesson well...
I don't have a problem with demonstrating as long as it doesn't get out of hand like a post soccer match or result in people getting killed. Having a major strike is not the best way to get out of a financial meltdown. All that does is make the situation worse by stopping people from contributing to the economic health of the country. Nor do I believe these austerity measures be levied on the Greek people without the same belt tightening being applied to the government. All I'm saying is a strike is a bad idea. Look what unions have done to the UK in years past. I remember years ago it was a strike of the week club in England or so it seemed.

The Greeks have NEVER gotten their 'house' in order. Read up on the economic history of the Byzantine Empire. It was , as is now a total mess and Byzantium's financial nightmare. There is no hope at all for them. They should be under quarantine and left to finally rot away once and for all...

In Byzantine times it was regarded easier to pay tribute to potential invaders as opposed to the former Roman system of policing the borders with earthworks and permanent garrisons. It has no bearing on this current crisis in any way.

What utter rubbish, at the time you're discussing, every country that had any form of financial system was in exactly the same position, it was still in it's infancy. There was no stable currency, plus much of the financial screwups were created by the invading Christians, the Knights Templar started the first banking system, based on what they had learnt from the Greeks. The Greeks together with the Romans gave the rest of the world, especially Europe, the strong foundation that enabled us to grow and move forward, you should read YOUR history. Now we have a chance to repay our debt to this ancient and once powerful country. But the Germans, due to their greed and love of money have been a major stumbling block for the Greek people.
