A true friend would ask you first. I'd let your boss know that you didn't put him forward for the job but i wouldn't tell him about the lateness/ unreliability. Thats up to him.

called head of the ward and told her that the person who clamed to be my best friend is not. And that I never told him to apply for a job on the ward. And never said I think he is right for the job. I know him for 30 years but more casual then anything. Seen him here and there . Can`t say anything about his work or anything else.....
My boss said she would have called me anyway. To confirm. But under the given circumstances she will give him the credit of the doubt and let him start on monday.
And whatever happens it will not fall back on me.
I am out of it........

Oh yes it does.
I know what he is like. Years and years and years back I did get him a job because I felt sorry for him. And after a week he did not turn up no more. I learned..........
That was 15 years ago and before that and since then he has never held a job down so I been told.

Uh, you tell the truth IF it comes down to it. Don't say anything until you are asked and you don't even have to admit he told you anything either.
When it comes to using a person as a professional reference, it is a shaky line. If he does something wrong and it reflects badly on you, he brings down your name and reputation. It's rude and very presumptuous of him to do that, he's very wrong for doing that.
Your only recourse now is to disassociate yourself from him on all levels and if your superiors come to you and ask questions, you throw him to the wolves just like he did to you. JHMO..your name is one of the few things you can count on in your life and when someone infringes and does something like this, all bets are off...you and your professional reputation come first not him.

I never meant to imply that fairydream had lied, just that it was time to counterbalance his lies, for her own sake - both in terms of her work reputation and the way that this man had effectively tried to bully her.
It can be such a shock when somebody behaves so, that sometimes its hard to see the wood from from the trees. If the way somebody has behaved towards you is a totally alien concept, its sometimes hard, at least initially, to know how to respond.
Fairydream took a step back, put a number of options together, looked for feedback in a relatively impartial environment, (we do tend to side with the OP in such situations and only know what we are told by the OP) and then dealt with the situation with minimum impact on the "offender".

It sounds like you did everything right.
For future reference, I would consider that person an enemy, who will use you, and take advantage of you, in anyway they can.
If you find out they are asking any questions about you in the future, I would recommend treating them like a stalker.

I'm in agreement with Jac.
I think you should be face to face with your boss when you put things straight. This way he can "read" your body language besides hearing your voice when you tell him how things really are. Body language says a lot along with the words out of your mouth
