darren9030: Time to try a new game. Think of a place anywhere in the world that is pronounced differently to how it is spelt.

I will start with Dun Laoghaire ( said as Dunleary ). Where you would arrive if travelling by boat to Dublin.

Actually if you were speaking in Irish it would be Dun Laoghaire pronounced as written. If you were speaking in English it would be Dunleary............again pronounced as written.handshake

Otonabee River....A tourist asked me "Where is the Ott-an-aw-bee River?" I said I had no idea. Then I realized he meant the O-tawn-a-bee River.

The Texas settlers slaughtered the Mexicans at San Jacinto and then proceeded to slaughter the pronunciation of all the former Mexican settlements.

Near Austin there is a small town named Manchaca.
The Mexicans pronounced it as it is written.
The Gringos pronounce it "man-shack".

And then there are the German settlements in Texas too.
Gruene is pronounced "green".

It's actually in a very beautiful area close to Bassenthwaite in the Lake District. I remember it well because i almost had an accident there once trying to avoid a red squirrel that ran into the road. ( yes the squirrel lived yay )
