Chrisys: Well Conrad, if I were a cynical person, I might think that USA based Big Business has decided that controlling the worlds agricultural commodities market was a very good way to control whole Nations, however, with China "buying" Africa, I think that the Chinese have outfoxed (yet again) the Americans.

They've moved on to buying Australia, too.

They are now the proud owners of prime agricultural land running many of the larger dairies, cos no bloomin Aussie with money is interested in buying our own dairy farms. It's criminal!

Anyway, what I love about the EU right now, is that it's growing weaker against the Aussie dollar.applause

Oh, then you at least get money. They just come and live in Russia. But they work, so the locals (as heavily drinking as they are) have no reason to complain. (Though they still do.)

Some time ago we went to a pub after seeing a theatre play, and have to squeeze us into space for 2 though we were 8 pers. “Why wouldn’t all smokers go out and let the pub be empty as in Switzerland” I thought. But, on the other side, 8 pers sharing space for 2 get a feeling of ultimate closeness and connection, so I won’t complain. grin

Hi, Venere, not sure that it is the EU that's weak against the Oz Dollar, more likely it's the Euro!.
Actually, the discussion about the smoking ban in Pubs and Restaurants was more about the principle of goverment having the ability to dictate to a Restaurant or Pub Owner what he provides for his clientelle, smoking is not illegal as alcohol is not, therefore as long as the bar.restaurant is well and safely operated, it should be left to the owner to to provide what his customers want, without legislation doing it for him. It is a matter of principle. One thing often missed is that sometimes in a group going out for the evening maybe just one or two are smokers but there maybe five non smokers, easy to say, "hard luck the smokers in the group will have to be outside!, but in reality, friends often say" lets stay at home and not go out".

Haha! Yes, I do know that. But only saw that I had left our 'euro' after I pressed the send button. I didn't think it worthwhile to write the obvious as a separate post. So, thanks for pointing out...the obviouslaugh

Well, if your restaurants are empty, that can only say that every one that goes out, oops sorry, that WENT out to dinner must have been a smoker. Sheesh, no wonder smoking was banned. I can just imagine the smoke alarms constantly going off!!!!!grin

Well, it's only a new development so I hardly think they've had an impact yet. Besides, as non residents/non citizens of the country, the money would most likely not remain in Australia, but go back to China. I really couldn't answer that with any certainty. It's not as if they are people coming to live in Australia as business migrants. they actually still live in China, simply buying Australian real estate, which happens to have an operating business.

Great, I'll come and join you at your table, so we can both be waited on hand and foot!laugh

Just being naughty!, obviously I knew what you meant but couldn't resist!, actually, here in Portugal it's all fairly laid back, smoke, drink dance, make noise, there is a place to go for everyone. As for the Chinese they are also buying Portugal, the locals sit and moan about them but are not so interested in the hard work that the Chinese are so good at, like Oz, Africa and many other places, the "locals" are better at bad mouthing the incoming hard working people than getting off their backsides and working.

I remember when I lived in Texas, visiting the Shrimp Fishing towns along the Gulf Coast populated by Vietnamese Boat Owners, in every bar you heard less than complimentary remarks about the Vietnamese, digging deeper I found out that these Vietnamese had been refugees after the Vietnam war and came to Texas with nothing, the families worked menial jobs untill they could buy the old worn out fishing boats that the Texans were leaving to rot. Within ten years they had taken over the industry, how?, well, the Texans worked a normal day of 8 hours, the Vietnamese worked the boat for 24 hours dividing the work between family members. The Chinese work the same way, the farms they are buying in Africa are actually being worked by Chinese families with local help.I say, Good Luck to them!.

I can vouch for Swedish country-side, Uppland. A restaurant owner would consider himself lucky if his house‘d filled to 2/3 on a Friday night in a raining season. And that before smoking was referred outside. Think it’s most due to the alcohol prices, not smoking issue. It’s 3-4 times cheaper to buy in a liqueur store and consume at home than at a restaurant.

In a large (by Swedish standards) town you haven’t booked a table on a Friday night and want a sip? Well… you’d have to enjoy your drink standing in a crowd, squeezed as herrings in a can. People would kill and eat you up for your place at a table. (Can only imagine what it’d look like if 20 % of the crowd smoked inside… one’d need an aqualung…)

Oh, no. I think you've very much understood me. I'm not the least bit bad mouthing the Chinese. Heck no! Why on earth would I want to do that. I'm only stating what's happening to our country. We're selling out. Now it's to the Chinese. Not a criticism of wealthy Chinese. I'm actually criticising wealthy Aussies not dipping into their bank accounts. If it weren't the Chinese, it could have been Russians. That's not the point. And by the way, the wealthy Chinese businessmen/women are not toiling the land with a plough at the helm!laugh It's Aussie laborers doing that, and I guess those who were working there before might be retained now that there is new ownership.

In this country we genereally have the greatest respect for Vietnamese and Chinese who have made it their home here. They are the most gorgeous people, and some of the most hard working around, reminiscent of all the early migrant ethic back say, in the 40's and 50's Australia.

Oh, and I LOVE Chinatown here where I live. And I'd die if suddenly we were told there were to be no more Asian grocery stores and so on!!!!! doh

Well… I’ve never felt comfortable in places where waiters have a degree in art history from Oxford and maitre d’hôtel wears diamond Shah as his tie pin… Somehow I expect that they’d feed me a dead cat and charge it as a swain… not that I like to eat swains either… Well, I’ve never tasted a swain, I just think that I wouldn’t like its taste. Somehow it feels like being too close to a frog, the same habitat and shape of feet and all that… (I’ve got my share of prejudices, looks like…)laugh

In Sweden they say that oneself is oneself’s best servant, and I agree with it. Would like to have a meal somewhere on sea shore (have had a few this summer, enjoyed them so much…). Pity, they don’t have sea in this land of Switzer. But WE have!!! And you are welcome if you’d want. Now it’s winter and the sea shore isn’t very enjoyable, ‘mfraid, but we’ve got summers here as well, despite evil rumors to the opposite. No, not évery year, but still…

Hi, Smoky, no i wasn't suggesting that you were bad mouthing the chinese, what I meant was that just like those Red Neck Texans, the locals, (i.e, the people living in the areas that immigrants settle in) are often very quick to condemn the immigrants, perhaps it is because the newcommers show up the inadequacies of the indiginous population?.

As for me I love Asian culture and especially their food, China town in Soho London was a regular place for me to eat when I lived there.
Many years ago I shared a Flat with two Indian brothers who were students, we lived on curry and food sent over, (dried) from their Family.
Some while ago I learnt how to cook a few Thai dishes and some classic Chinese dishes, quite often here I will put up an Asian buffet for friends, we graze on it for hours, it really is social food.

Ah, of-course. You are in the land of 'Girl with the Dragon Tattoo'. I have watched the film (Swedish production, the English speaking version)and started reading the book. Have you come across it? Tiger Woods' wife obviously must have!(golf clubs thru' car windowlaugh).

It would be lovely to visit Sweden one day, and can only imagine how pristine your beaches are. Nothing like the sea, is there? The sound of the tide coming in, seagulls communing over spoils, and how dizzy you feel as the water swirls around your feet as you look out into the horizon. Which reminds me, it's starting to be the weather for it here now. We are surrounded by water in Oz as you would know. Next year, God willing, I may also have my little place 30min from the Adriatic coast. You are most welcome to retreat there. 'Bookings' are starting already!laugh

I’d luv to… when and if… Thank you a lot!

As to Swedish beaches… there’s one on Baltic sea shore, just in love with the place – a granite monolith running into sea… stone and water and sky…(I do fall in love with places…) But now I live long (6 hoursby train) away from it.

But there’s a beach here near Göteborg that I like a lot. I’ve got few pictures from this season but don’t know how to post them here from my hard disc. Though all the beaches are similar – it’s water and sky and seagulls (I haven’t seen any in Turkey though…) One negative, and it’s indeed very negative, feature of this place is jelly-fish. Really joy killers. And there’s nothing else that one can do with it, only to go to Mediterranean… or to Adriatic…

Thank goodness we don't have them here, but Queensland and off Darwin, full of box jelly fish. Definitely a joy killer! The Baltic shoreline sounds wonderful. Even though it's a long train ride, maybe you could stay on a few days to make the trip worthwhile?

Yes, the Adriatic coast is something I'm looking forward to also as I have yet to sight it myself. I've been told, and seen pictures, tht the waters are clean and clear, an dbeaches not very populated which is how I like it. I am reserving excitement for when it actually happens.

I will send you my private email addy. You can send the photos to me there. Look forward to receiving them. Just make sure you resize them as otherwise it will take ages to d/l. Ta!

Outside of the big cities, are all little towns and hamlets ..... and the restaurants are mainly Olde Worlde Traditional ones .... 100`s of years old, low beamed ceilings, and a "special" table called the "Stammtisch" ..... around which sit all the regulars, to play cards, chat, drink beer/wine, and smoke......

When Grandfather dies then his oldest son inherits "his" chair at the Stammtisch ......and so on, thru the generations.....

Farmers pull up at their favourite restaurant, park their tractors with trailer of grapes, or whatever harvest they have, and come in for a drink, smoke, and chat with their buddies .....

Now .... they don`t go there anymore.

Now .. the "restaurant" (they are not regular restaurants, more of a pub, where you can also get something to eat .. maybe just sausages and bread) ... well, lack of customers means they close down.

And the traditional way of life is no longer available.

Oh, maybe a "new tradition" is being started? ....... they buy a crate of beers, take it home ... and drink and smoke alone, or with a few buddies.....

But .. sure as hell ... the Non-Smokers are not patronising the places that have been designed for them. Only in the cities, with regular Eatery restaurants ...... specialist Eating Shops(?) does this law not affect the restarateurs.

This is happening here in my village.

I am a non smoker but enjoy the atmosphere of the local bars.

The old men come in during the week for a drink, play dominos or cards, and smoke. Younger people, mostly musicians of the village band, use the bars at weekends. Not all but a lot smoke. In 2011 the law changes, no smoking in all public places. These quiet bars that struggle through the week with few customers will lose that weekend custom which I am sure gets them from one fiesta to the next financially.

Already in the Twelve years I have lived here I have seen 3 bars close due to lack of business. I now fear that 2 more will close shortly, leaving one souless bar Restaurant !

But why wouldn’t the majority get their right (privilege? tradition?) back? Given, as you’ve pointed on, Switzerland is independent and doesn’t have to follow stupid EU regulations? Especially if sons inherit fathers’ smoking habits. They are in a position to defend their traditional life style in their own country, aren’t they? Surprising that they allowed the change that no one wanted in the first place.
