I'm reading this as not most women our age (the mature age), but many young women do this. Some do act very needy and attach quickly, as if in their 20's they are going to be "old maids".
And it is very much low self esteem. I've personally seen it, and I've had long discussions with some of the younger gals. I don't get it either.

My thoughts on this are that I often find overall that it's men who may not feel complete without a woman by their side.

Any person will be treated ONLY as they allow another to treat them, this goes the same in all areas of life whether it be a relative, friend or romantic interest.
I don't think this thread is about male bashing at all, it is written by a lady that is trying to figure out things in her life and is looking for input from others.
Relationships take time and sometimes there are obstacles to overcome, but things will happen in its own time, as it is supposed to and when it is supposed to happen.
Stop trying to rush things, enjoy your life and let the chips fall where they may, I think (some) people are in such a rush to be with another person they overlook or dismiss certain things which is never good because when you compromise yourself too much, it's called settling and that's not fair to the other person or yourself.
