just because some of my ancestors were cannibals ,or it was considerate normal to stone someone to death or hang them to death ,do I have to accept their ways or customs???

I had a relationship for 2 years with a man who is Iraqi (immigrant to Australia), Muslim. So, what I understood that most of his relatives are married to cousins, just a few are not. Most of them have a good marriage, probably only my boyfriend had not but I think it was his fault as he is drinker, unfaithful and verbally abusive person, however very educated.

His justifications of those marriage choices were: when you know a person from her/his childhood you see who you marry, there are no negative surprises in behaviour, domestication, health, education, family status. Also, even those marriages were arranged but in reality it was done after informal consultation (through brothers and sisters) that both parties do not mind to get married to each other and there is a mutual attraction. So, nobody was forced into it, there were choice to refuse even before it was arranged.
Also, when both partners are from the same family, their marital problems (which they still have - people can not be agree on everything, and women in Iraq are very powerful in family, so they can demand if they need to) resolved within the family, so there are no sides as it could be when one of the partners is from other clan and complains made there.
Also, he said that there were no health problems with their children ever. But he also said in Iraq there is a law which do not give you permission to marry before you check your blood for genetic disorder.
