I've always ripped people off just like any 2nd hand business does, I make no appology for that.
I've always thought it would make great reality tv following me around the 50 garage sales I do on a Saturday morning and the 2 - 4 markets I go to Sunday morning. My friends cringe when I offer someone the ultra low offers I do make on stall holders items. They say it's already a bargain and I wouldn't even be looking at it if it wasn't, but if I can get it any cheaper, I will try the low offer and 5 times out of 10 I don't even have to go halfway between my offer and their asking price as they just say yes.
2nd hand dealers are a very quirky bunch, we have to deal with the intelectual well to do Mercedes driving Toorak set who do buy 2nd hand to save money unlike the middle class who only buy at full retail prices and then wonder why they never get anywhere with the mortgage or better still never get the money saved up to get a deposit up to afford a home loan.

You'd have to be nuts to put something up for sale and not put a higher price on it so that you can knock it down when someone shows interest.
That's why people rarely argue when it comes to secondhand goods - they want to sell them so they need to be able to negotiate.
I bought a small chest of drawers at a secondhand dealers the other day which had $20 on it - I asked if they could do better and they did it for $15.
Mightn't be much but the 5 bucks may as well be in my pocket

Absolutely, it's expected by salespeople that a potential customer will ask for a discount.
And if that's not possible, then the salesperson has to talk up the value in the product.
Anyone who pays full price for any big ticket items these days, or even the "sale" price without asking for a better deal is a goose
