criminals almost by definition don't follow the rules. if they were to outlaw guns, the very people that you don't want to have them, would still have them.
i would not want criminals to be able to look down my street, or your street, and think to themselves, "heh heh, odds are real good i'm the only one here with one of these"
the fact that gun ownership is legal doesn't stop crime. but i do like the fact that if someone chooses a life of crime, there is at least an element of risk rather than easy pickings.
it seems to be easy to get a concealed weapons permit around where i live. i am not sure how i feel about this. i think if i were law enforcement, i would not like that very much at all.
i have worked with many people that not only have these permits, and carry a weapon, but for some reason feel a need to tell me.
if i had one, i think i would be very quiet about it.
it makes me wonder, what is the purpose of telling me?
are they saying,"don't mess with me"
or, "if you run into trouble, come get me"
or.........what?
the few times i actually asked why are you telling me this, i was met with a blank stare. i don't think they even knew why they were telling me this. maybe i am just easy to talk to?

Well, if I'm with someone that has a weapon, I would want them to tell me. I would want to know. If something were to go down, I'd want to get to it if my friend couldn't. It is not that easy to get the concealed weapon permit in Okla. It's costly and time consuming. So, most criminals don't have a permit, believe you me. But I know many people that do. At my age, I'm considering it. We "elderly" seem to targets for perps

It's not all that easy to get a concealed permit here in NH as you have to pass a background check.
Some states such as NC even require you to take a concealed weapons course before being allowed a permit.
I have a permit that has no expiration date on it and I have had it since 1990
If I'm carrying, you'd never know it. In most cases I only carry it when at the family camp in northern NH. There is always a loaded 357mag in my bedroom where I can get to it quickly at night

They tell you because they expect you to be impressed in some way. When you're not, you take the wind out of their sails and they don't know how to react to that.
It disempowers them when they expect to be in the power position.

It negates the whole point of the weapon, see?
one coworker that was an old drunk and always hungover, did actually verbally threaten me with one.
i told him what i would do with it if he pulled it out. the boss, who was working with us decided to work elsewhere. we never had that conversation again.
I am a hunter so I do own long guns but I don't see any sence in a person owning a pistal to conceal or any other weapon. They were designed to put food on the table not to harm each other
Here in WV, you have to take a concealed weapons course, which, IMHO, is just another way for the state to make some money. And trust me, in WV, almost everyone has multiple weapons. My best friend's father has about 40 weapons, with about 100 rounds of ammunition for each one. I myself have a 40 caliber semi-auto pistol, for protection.
But I do think that gun control laws need to be strictly enforced. And they should start by not allowing gun sales at gun shows unless done by a licensed dealer -- and only after passing a background check.
And I know the argument that criminals will have guns anyway and won't follow the laws. But at least strict enforcement might cut down the numbers a little bit.
And there should also be strict restrictions on the number of guns that any one person can purchase in a single day. That might help control the number of guns that end up going south of the border and fueling the drug cartels.

overall i agree with your sentiment.
but a lot of people have a romance with pistols and various guns.
and in some cases i do see a need. many small business owners that have regular habits and regular cash drops etc.
Since I no longer live in the USA (Texas, to be exact), I'm not gonig to get into the debate.
I did have a concealed handgun in my car when I used to work in the evenings (a part-time job during my university days), just in case someone ever tried to force me to go to a second location.
Because if came down to him or me, I guarantee I would not hesitate to take him out.
But, now that I live in a gun-control country, I feel a hell of a lot safer traveling or walking at night. It's a feeling I never want to give up.
