biggles90000: Oh i know Wiliam was from a noble family in Scotland i think i read somewhere they were almost in line foor the Scottish crown but not sure but they were powerful Scottish land owners i think.
he would have been minor nobility as far as i know, well educated no doubt as a noble, as for his tactics, the would have been considered unchivalrous at the time

Great idea for a thread biggles and from the interest shown I am not alone on here in my interest in military history ,, Julius Caeser has to be my favourite General, some man for one man as we say in Kildare, 2000 odd years on and he is still remembered in every day life. He devised the calender we use today, this month July is named in honour of him,, the olympics will be held in londinium across the water and almost all the battles he fought were against impossible odds but he still came out on top. One amazing man.

Green_Sleeves: Emm, you'll need to start a specific 'picture' thread for starters, I doubth biggles put this is the picture section?

Secondly you'll have to have pictures uploaded on the likes of Photobucket etc.

yeh..ta....just uploaded a pic of me grandad in the cavalry alongside a pic of his medals...there are 3 medals, 2 of which are the same medal one showing front, the other reverse....as his bro was also in ww1....its in my profile pics if anyone is interested...

Just had a look there, looks like a nice display!! thumbs up If I may point out one thing though, the second ribboned medal, the 'War medal' has the wrong ribbon, it should have a blue, white and orange ribbon.

howlingwolf: I know Jim Herlihy wrote a book about he RIC and he is would know if there was any such photo in existence. I don't have his email but I'm sure you can find it someplace. He lives in Blarney, Cork I think.

yeh ta for this....my cousin was in touch with Jim. In fact, we found out quite by accident about the history....an historian in the Garda just happened to say to my cous whos also a musician, that he coudl be related to the first bandmaster of the RIc...and that started the ball rolling.

Tho the band played every week for the public, in various places round Dublin...and opened many a fine Victorian bandstand.. we can find one foto of the band! (plenty of fotos of empty bandstands tho!)

Not a lot of people here knew who Michael Collins was either until the film came out hole hah, ah no, but what the two movies do have in common is that they're both historically incorrect, over dramatised Hollywood tripe! roll eyes

I dont believe they did, certainly not as dramatic as crashing through the gates! From what I believe they scaled the walls and 'dropped in' by surprise and took there time firing off pot shots into the crowd.

If we're talking about military leaders then Collins is definitely in the 'Terrorist Class'. He led a guerrilla war not a conventional one. Put him in with Garabaldi, Mao, Tito, Orde Wingate, Paddy Blair Mayne and of course, bin Laden.
