biggles90000: My favourite has to be Zulu Michael Caines film also staring Richard Baker brilliant film about the defence of Rorkes Drift.

Thats a good'un alright, one of those ones that you can enjoy on a lazy (preferably wet/dreary) Saturday or Sunday afternoon. I dont know much about the history of that period but I do wonder how historically correct it is?! dunno

In relation to downed aricraft in Eire during the war I heard htis morning on RTE playback the story of a U.S. B17 that got lost I believe and ended up landing in a field in Cork. The crew were taken to Clonakilty and treated very well, as to was there pet monkey, Tojo. The boys were in town for a few days while a makeshift runway was constructed to get the aircraft back on its way. Unfortunately Tojo passed away while in Cork, its believed he's buried out the back of O'Donavans hotel.

Poor Tojo blues

delamer: The 7th Cavalry are now a helicopter unit if I'm not mistaken.

You're thinking of the surfing gang in Apocolypse Now?

They have some airborn, armour and infantry ... and a whole lot of Texan rednecks. As Gunny said in Full Metal Jacket;"Boy they got two things in Texas, queers and steers and you don't look muck like a steer to me".

Gone a little limp there! laugh

I know they used to do this during WW2 also, infaltable and timber tanks, planes, boats etc. They assembled millions of them in the Dover area to make the Germans think the allied were assembling for an invasion from that point.

Simple, but effective wink

Great film. I'm a big fan of 'A Bridge Too Far' cool

There one called 'The Castle Keep' from the late 60's with Burt Lancaster which was pretty good. Sydney Pollacks 4th film apparently.

This isn't military history but it's a great documentary about one of the best trained police units in the world. Look of the entire three episodes x 6 parts for some great footage. Just chage the episode and part and search for it in YouTube.

Green_Sleeves: I adore the remake of 'The Thin Red Line', very powerful, thought provoking piece of cinema (its one of them movies I reckon you either love or hate, its no 'gung ho!' Saving Private Ryan, thats why I love it). Have you ever seen the original? Very different to Mallicks remake.

i didnt really like The Thin Red Line but did think that film the Dirty Dozen was excellent.
