Damianowen: My mum worked at a dairy. She used to bring poddy calves home and raise them. That dairy didn't send them to slaughter. They just used to pen them up and sell them as poddies. The ones that didn't sell starved to death.
crying thats terrible...

good on your mum. I remember feeding the poddy calves out of buckets of milk when I was a little girl visiting my uncle in Mt Larcom.

I tell you Serene (you beautiful thing you) some farming practices are questionable but those guys should have been prosecuted for the way they ran that dairy.

Having watched Landline (ABC noon Sundays) where the some realistic comments from our beaf producers have been put forward, you have to question the hype from the media.

Last Sunday had a very young female beef producer from the Pilbara region putting her side across. Not just her financial side. She has had a Nuffield Scholarship (bloody hard to get) where she spent 6 months on a study experience mainly in Indonesia. Her comments totally conflict with the animal rights views.

She expressed how the Indonesians tend to put a lot of care in to assuring that the cattle are well cared for, even suggesting they take more care than we do in Australia. She had seen the outrageous treatment filmed and couldn't believe that that was filmed in Indonesia after what she had seen during her lengthy stay.

It would appear that the "normal" slaughter method depicted was from a slaughterhouse providing to a very minority religious purists group and is not the normal for Indonesia.

Yellow Tail Wines contributed significantly to the American 'Humane Society to Animals' until they found that their agenda was not to prevent inhumane acts to animals but more aimed at being a Vegan society.

I am not against Vegans (I work with a few vegetables) but as was said in the British Parliament quite a few years back "I am not against the vegetable legislation (was something else but being politcally correct here) but do not not want it to be compulsary."

robplum: i think the rural people of Tasmania are sick of people planting plantations alongside there farms. Sick of the stunt Gunns pulled in offering $3250 an acre instead of the usual $1200 for land, sick knowing the water table has in many areas been contaminated, that the fish have growths growing from there bodies, sick of the bush fire threat alongside there homes and many other concerns even the loggers are sick of to. I don't hug trees, have driven logging trucks and think your not thinking very well mate

I lived in Tassie for many years and when I was there lots of farmers used to lease their land to Gunns and plant Opium Poppies on the rest .......they became very wealthy.
This was about 10 to 12 years ago.
Knowing farmers they would be crying all the way to the bank at $3250 an acre as the average farmer struggles to make a living at the best of times over there.dunno

confused you're for logging virgin bush but not for logging re-growth? So where do the native animals go to live when you chop down all the virgin bush for the worlds fibre demands.
Personally I'd be allowing the farming of hemp as a pulp fibre.

It looks like this issue has come to the fore again....to make sure of a public swell of support give one of the animals a name and film its journey from life to death there would be an uproar.

But it must have a name! yeah ......Im a cynic' the herd is so easy to predict.
and manipulate.
sigh
