anyone see the doco on black lungworm , which is spreading south, what it can do to babies is horrific, apparently it lives in the faeces of snails etc and it burrows into the spine and eventually the brain, better check your bubbas after they crawl in the grass

There must have been a story about it in a magazine recently and it seems a baby died from it - when I read the letters in the next issue, people were saying they were totally unaware of it as most would be
I'd think we've all put our babies on the grass to play at some time, how unlucky can you be

yes that litle baby girl did die,it went to her brain.you would never think the common garden snail would cause an oncoming slow epidemic,if they dont do something quick.rats eat snails ,so there is a dangerous concoction there.no more playing in damp grass for babies,
My understanding hydatid grows on sheep liver (small what gritty spot on the liver) and is transmitted from dogs to human. NZ used to test all farm dogs every few months but i've not seen or heard of any concern here.

thats pretty common knowledge about the hydatid worm with sheep, and i think a lotof rural people are aware of it,but i think what they are concerned about is this worm exists in suburban communities with a large concentration of little peopleand its becoming more of a problem.especially with the number of rats increasing
ewwww I remember finding my 16 month old son in the back yard frothing at the mouth , It took three holdem down and brush like mad to get the shells outfrom between his teeth , He was most upset Ide ruined his fun..... I was nearly sick gaging just the thought ....YUK

After I logged off here last night I saw the doc on this rat worm / snails I have never heard of it before it is terrible what it does to babies and adults too. I wonder how long this has been round cause I haven't seen anything about it before. hope they can eliminate it for good.

With the worming treatments that are available for dogs Hydatid worm should not be an issue. Farmers and the general public have had it drummed into them to never feed your dogs offle and worm your dogs regulary with an all wormer. Roundworm can be just as dangerous to humans. The problem is easy solved again regular worming of our pups/ dogs. Hopefully they can solve the problem of this rat worm just as easily.
Im surprised that more people dont know about it. When I was studying Early Childhood Education - we learnt about alot of those icky things there, and that was one of the nasties.
I'd be shocked if the Child Carers didnt know all about it.
