lostinspace: I plan to do this trip April 2012 has anyone on the site done it?
Thank you.
It's a long highway comprised of many states...are you going to do the whole thing? I've ridden the part through Pennsylvania including a small section called route 666 in the Allegheny National Forest (definitely had my sensors on full for that short ride LOL).

i would just get a tee-shirt that said i had been there... ...there's a lot more prettier places to see than all the tourist stops on route 66....but then again, to each his own

Ur_Knight: For someone that doesn't live in the States, but has heard of, and actually drove on a portion of, Route66... that link you provided about Stuckeys, was really neat to read.
Thanks Witchy
I've never heard of Stuckeys, but it was a great link and a great story. I'll look for them next time i'm over there!
My parents used to take us to a Stuckeys between Illinois and Indiana when I was really young. It's just a silly place but really retro. I used to want to travel around like Kerouak, follow the Grateful Dead, travel the Ren Faire circuit, live in a revamped hippie bus with wood paneling, antique furniture, and stained glass panels. I might end up doing that as an old lady. There's still time.

I think it's famous all over the world, they did a photo exhibition in the library here in Turku Finland, showing the route and photos of cities along it's route. So interesting, I'd love to do the whole of it!!
mustbnutz: I live about 2 blocks from 66........Maybe I can answer some of your questions.
me too,n mid way on 66,to calif.alot of movie stars stayed here,at drake hotel n boots motel, from clark gable, think they found lana woods on 66 here?made here a star, workin at a drug store.
Hmmm. Route 66 would be a great place to start a Hippie commune. I would like totally start one with a hydroponic bio dome and a big bunch of super environmental hippie houses half-buried in the earth. They would have bubble shaped rooms and look like Hobbit houses. Then we would recruit members from the travelers we liked the most.

I went the length of RT66 from St Louis to Riverside CA in a tractor trailer. It was an old gas job with a 348 Chevy V8 engine. Going across Amarillo TX we had a steady 15 MPH headwind. That old POS wouldn't get over about 45 MPH with all 4 barrels wide open. Running at about 5000 ft altitude was a contributing factor. It was a long boring trip I would not want to repeat. There was a stretch across the dessart in AZ (we hit that section at night to keep from over heating) where there was not a gas station for the next 120 miles. We decided to throw another 10 gallons in the tank just in case.
There are much better road trips you might want to consider like going the length of the Blue Ridge Parkway from Front Royal VA to NC.
I'm not sure if there's a toll on the Blue Ridge Parkway (364 miles). Maybe someone else can say. BTW, what will you be driving? If it has good handling and not some big gas pig SUV, Skyline Drive is for you.
