That time of year is here folks and everyone is shopping, buying presents.
All the towns are lit up with illuminations, santas, elves, christmas trees.
Christmas parties, drinking,, eating and celebrating the holiday.
Are we forgetting that this is the time of year we celebrate the birth of Christ?
Or does the birth of Christ not play any part in your idea of christmas?
Please feel free to discuss and debate.

commercialism beating the real reason about the ears eh..

im an atheist..but how do u explain that to ur kids that santa only visits the christian kids? when its got so commercial and traditional within ur society that u must celebrate somehow..

i may not be a christian..but i do believe xmas is a time for family and wind down at the end of the year...leading up to new year and breaking in another cycle ...its also a nice heartwarming way to spend the coldest part of our year.

have you actually left your religion fully as in cancelled your membership, just curious

as for the meaning of christmas and people losing sight of it i suppose it is as most traditions in western society, we see ourselves as been above it

There are quite a few Christians who do not celebrate Christmas because of it's pagan nature.

God is God sundance. We may have called him Zeus, Thor, Daghda, Cernunnos, Jupiter, Apollo, Jehovah . He is still God. People just learned different ways of worship.

One Solitary Life

He was born in an obscure village
The child of a peasant woman
He grew up in another obscure village
Where he worked in a carpenter shop
Until he was thirty

He never wrote a book
He never held an office
He never went to college
He never visited a big city
He never travelled more than two hundred miles
From the place where he was born
He did none of the things
Usually associated with greatness
He had no credentials but himself

He was only thirty three

His friends ran away
One of them denied him
He was turned over to his enemies
And went through the mockery of a trial
He was nailed to a cross between two thieves
While dying, his executioners gambled for his clothing
The only property he had on earth

When he was dead
He was laid in a borrowed grave
Through the pity of a friend

Nineteen centuries have come and gone
And today Jesus is the central figure of the human race
And the leader of mankind's progress
All the armies that have ever marched
All the navies that have ever sailed
All the parliaments that have ever sat
All the kings that ever reigned put together
Have not affected the life of mankind on earth
As powerfully as that one solitary life

Dr James Allan © 1926.

Christianity is about a relationship with a risen saviour

Jesus has had more impact on mankind for good than any other person.

That vid is just about the pagan origin of Christmas but leave out the last holy Christian bulloney. I'm no theologian but I think there is a difference in the names. The monotheistic (Abrahamic) religions have One God; YHVH, God or Allah. The other Gods are from various pantheons or aspects where it takes many to form a complete vision of the divine.

many people would call me a pagan..or other things maybe cos ive a deep respect for nature and humanity..i dont have belief in a higher being/power/afterlife/ its a label..one which i wont accept...but no jimbo i didnt technically leave catholic church ..Yet....i know theres a way how...and i prob should ...i just didnt want to be another name jumping on the bandwagon of those who were doing it as a stand against the atrocities the clergy performed.

but i never believed..even as a kid..i announced just after confirmation time what i felt and was told...fine..whatever u want.

on the subject of xmas tho.. i do think its a farce we do once a year..full of nostalgia and false smiles for some people...but id like to think im peaceful n friendly to all the people i love all year round.but ill accept theirs this time of year..better than nothing.

from what i have read over the years alot of what we know as christian came from pagan festivals and celebrations the reason for this is simple if you want to convert people then keep the dates but change what their celebrating, otherwise what you get is civil unrest it would be to much change for them to take at once, the reckon jesus was actually born in the spring of the year, but at the council of nicaea and later constantinople these christian events were fitted into already existing pagan ones a compromise out of necessity i suppose

I'm not sure what you've been reading, but it's back to front. Christianity started the day Christ was born, for which there is plenty of evidence. Some aspects of Paganism and Judaism were brought into, or adopted into Christianity - such as the 'Christmas tree', but none of those things affected or changed Christianity. As for the actual date of Christ's birth, while there is no available concrete evidence - does it really matter? The fact remains that He was born in Bethlehem and we celebrate his birth at this time of year.

Over the centuries there have been 3 different calendars - The Egyptian Calendar, the Roman Calendar, and the current one which we use is the Julian Calendar. None of those calendars had anything to do with the Council of Nicea or Constantinople. The changes made in each calendar made it difficult to actually pin point the exact date of Christ's birth - but again, does it really matter?

Merry Christmas

I think that for the Christians among us..Christ should play a part in our lives every day... I however am not a religious person ,I am personally religious but I do not have a lot of time for organized religion.
To me organized religion does not really promote us helping others..
I donate blood and do voluntary work which I think is more important than beating down the chapel doors...I do this all year round...so screw the once a year thing...and Yes I am going to drink, eat and be merry this Christmasdancingsanta dancingsanta dancingsanta dancingsanta dancingsanta
