I was in the middle of writing a comment a couple days ago and very quickly got thrown off CS.
Then a message came that I was infected with 29 different viruses and it listed them. I knew it was a phoney because I don't do banking online.
It offered to clean the virus out for $39.99 but I was suspicious so I didn't do anything. Someone came to my house to clean it out but it turns out that what they were selling is the actual virus and it's locked in tight. I couldn't even get to any other websites or to Yahoo.
I am without a computer at home and am in the library now.
My daughter did some research and it turns out that this particular virus has been around for a long time. It's locked in and we can't get around it.
So you won't see me for a long time... ...just can't afford a new computer right now.

Now that you wrote it,yes it's Vista.
It's worth a try to ask my daughter to do exactly what your son does.
Thank you Bo and have a Happy and Healthy New Year....

And when it's installed get Avast!-anti-virus, it's free and it's the best I know... And tell whoever uses your puter to stay off the shady sites. Google has a rating for trusted sites on their search engine, it'll help you sort out the crap on the Net.

Monte, since you said it's an old virus, you should be able to use an anti-virus CD and run it directly from the drive at boot up, and don't allow your OS (Windows) to load. Let the CD run all the tests and it should locate as well as quarantine that virus regardless of how deep rooted it may appear. Most of those claim to deep root only IF the OS is active. Just make sure that any AV software you use, clearly states that it is bootable. Going this route is a lot better than having to reformat and reinstall everything. And since you have a Dell, you'll need its installation CD in order to reinstall your OS and all the componant drivers.

Hey, Snuggs, there have been variations of this virus going around for some time now. You will get as many responses as to how to fix this as their are posters on here. To spare any expense, the first thing you should try is a system restore. If you can restore to an earlier date, then you will be able to get back on the net. If you do get back online then go to download "Microsoft Security Essentials", this is Window's own antvirus software and it is free. There are many other antivirus programs out there but you have to pay for them and they very often can annoy the hell out of you. Hope this helps. Ken!!
Go to start then click on "run" type in " chkdsk /r " a black dos box will pop up type y and hit enter and reboot
Windows run a repair which will take a little while, failing that while you on the other computer download Kaspersky Anti-Virus program and install it on your infected computer. the download allows trial and contains the latest bases
Get it from here,Download it onto another Computer, and transfer it to a USB-Stick and run it on your Machine from it! No need to install it,since it is a freestanding Application.

A system restore (SR) is a nice option, just know that anything installed ( or written documents) after the OS marks a restore date will be lost and need reinstalled...documents will be permanently lost if they weren't previously backed up. But a SR should remove the virus unless the virus itself had disabled the SR feature.
Also, there are trojans that disable Windows AV software in order to allow viruses to get in undetected. Here is an excellent and free software that not only protects from and removes any known trojans, but will also protect and remove adwares and hijackers.
