gininitaly: Actually only one of the above WAS American.
People criticize todays America.. and rightly so, because what happens there affects the world... in fact they have brought not only their own, but the entire global economy to it's knees.
To pretend that isn't the case at this point is ridiculous... we have become an oligarchy, government bought by a few very deep pockets who are manipulating and changing our democratic laws for their own ends.... to the complete and total disregard of it's citizens. We should not only be ashamed... but outraged.
If these aren't signs of something deathly wrong with what used to be one the freest and most democratic countries in the world... here's a glass of cool aid to nirvana.
OMG hahaha look at the sources for your information. hahaha
Governments rule by the will of the people and from what I've seen in coverage of the elections in the US more and more people are feeling disenfranchised, feel that they have no power, that the government governs in spite of them rather than for them. It is a slippery slope, if people don't participate because they feel that the government is ignoring them, then the government WILL ignore them because there opinions do not influence the vote, vicious circle. Usually this results in either a rise in far left/right parties (both essentially the same thing) or open insurrection. Neither are particularly pleasant options. If you want proof look at the rise of the National Front/BNP in poor white areas in the UK. The recent laws allowing unlimited bribery by big corporations, the sense that the governments care more about the rich than the poor would suggest that the US is heading the same way.
In response to: Thought this might be an interesting topic t discuss given all the events taking place the last year or two.
In my oppinion, the US Government is not sustainable in a conisitant way. There have been many upturns and downturns throughout the years. When 1% of the population has 80% of the wealth and the other 99% percent must share the remaining capitol, it is a failed system. Those on top with strive to keep the Wealth for themselves and this greed will cripple the nation. The middle class is actually the ones that drive the nations economy. If we are doing well, then the economy and the country as a whole flourishes. Unfortunately, We are not doing well and we are in one of the greatest recessions since the 1930's. Another flaw in capitolism is greed. With everyone charging as much as the wish for goods and services, the prices keep rising and most citezens can't afford a quality lifestyle. Technolegy is also causing issues. The more we can do things with equipment, the less jobs are available and more business are forced to close. The population of this country is a problem as well. The borders should have closed years ago and it should have be enforced drastically. We do not have enough industry to sustain the ammount of individuals in this country. Obviously, there are many contributing factors to a failed economy but there are aslo solutions to repair it one of which is creating more balance in the economy, such as, having a fixed profit margain for goods and services. The fact of the matter is, this will never change because the greed of the one percent is so intense. They control the economy and keep the money in their hands by influencing decisions made by our govertnment. This corruption is our downfall.

drbombay: No, I'm not for the most part happy with my government BUT-the old BUTT-peoples perceptions vary & their entitled to their OPINION(rightfully so) and I mine. I think that people should look at they're own governments for none are perfect and not to say we're right in everything for that would be unrealistic but it's the best we have right now & have to take what they dish out as I believe holds true for most countries. MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY & so on-get my drift..TY
Not really - because I never said that I think the US Government was outdated. I have heard a lot of Americans say it though, and the point of the thread is to find out what aspects of the current US government those Americans consider to be outdated, be it the nature of the US political system or even the role of state/local governments, and then to look at what arguments people might have against those views.
The problem is that some people are just too quick to react to perceived criticism of their nation with scorn or hostility. I am not criticising America and have no intention of doing so.
As for the Queen of Australia, well the Queen has nothing to do with the US government and therefore is totally unrelated to this thread. As are the governments of Australia, the UK and Germany. The thread was not about them at all. In fact the Queen of Australia is only relevant to this discussion if some American proposed that you all go back to being a monarchy. Somehow I doubt that anyone would propose that.
