These "laws" are aimed at the Black Marketers who are making a profit. Having been using computers since the early 70s, I sympathise with the developers of the programs. And the same goes for musos and film makers who go to great expense to produce their wares.

Many of the programmers I have dealt with over the years do make a distinction between users and profit-makers. Simply put, "If you want to make some money from something I have done, I expect something in return."

Okay, I may have a movie or 3 downloaded from the 'public' net, but they are for me to watch and not for me to make money from. I also have a small consultancy business but I only use legit software as part of this work. Some of my work over the last 40 years has been further developed or refined by others and has resulted in safer systems being developed. I do object to them not giving me credit for my work but it is the end result I am looking for.

But when you do expend a lot of time and money to produce something (music, movies or programmes) and somebody else makes money from your ideas, then I do see the righteousness of this type of legislation.

But, as one of the many USA Ammendments states, "Free Speech" is correct, it does have its limits when somebody else is making money from your ideas.

there was a time when you had to look around all the record stores to find the single you wanted or an album or compilation that had the song you wanted, even get it imported just so you could play it and listen to it when you wanted.
Now you just go to youtube and convert the video to an mp3 then pop it onto a CD or your ipod.

That really pees me off. If the U.S. wishes to legislate anything, can they please keep it within their shores. I'm sure other countries can decide for themselves. Surely! As it stands, as evidenced by many youtube videos that aren't accessible say, from Austalia due to U.S. copyright laws, it shows that copyright infringement can be contained. Why do these legislators think they can dictate to other countries?

The problem with these laws is it makes you liable for someone else's crimes. So if a spammer in a comment to my blog leaves a link to copyrighted content, I can be extradited and jailed. So I become responsible for keeping my site clean, which would be way too expensive even for companies like Google, let alone to Wikipedia. The only way to protect yourself is to shut down your site. The above laws would kill the internet as we know it.

They do keep their laws within their shores. Apparently they believe the whole world falls within their shores.

Perhaps some quarters think that this is a good time to push through such a Bill, with so much attention being on the primaries...Te be shore, to be shore...
