Conrad73: Urban Myths much?

urban myths, eh? Let's talk about 9/11 commission and what some of its members had to say about the 'pentagon version of 9/11'. the commission admitted that it never got all the facts.

1. 9/11 Commission co-chair Lee Hamilton says "I don't believe for a minute we got everything right", that the Commission was set up to fail, that people should keep asking questions about 9/11, and that the 9/11 debate should continue.

2. 9/11 Commissioner Bob Kerrey said that "There are ample reasons to suspect that there may be some alternative to what we outlined in our version . . . We didn't have access . . . ." He also says that it might take "a permanent 9/11 commission" to end the remaining mysteries of September 11.

3. The 9/11 Commission’s co-chairs said that the 9/11 Commissioners knew that military officials misrepresented the facts to the Commission, and the Commission considered recommending criminal charges for such false statements. (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/08/01/AR2006080101300.html?sub=new).

4. 9/11 Commissioner Timothy Roemer said “We were extremely frustrated with the false statements we were getting” (http://edition.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/08/02/9-11panel.pentagon/index.html

5.9/11 Commissioner Max Cleland resigned from the Commission, stating: “It is a national scandal”; “This investigation is now compromised”; and “One of these days we will have to get the full story because the 9-11 issue is so important to America. But this White House wants to cover it up” (http://www.democracynow.org/2004/3/23/the_white_house_has_played_cover)
6. The Senior Counsel to the 9/11 Commission (John Farmer) – who led the 9/11 staff’s inquiry – recently said “At some level of the government, at some point in time…there was an agreement not to tell the truth about what happened“. He also said “I was shocked at how different the truth was from the way it was described …. The tapes told a radically different story from what had been told to us and the public for two years…. This is not spin. This is not true.” And he said: “It’s almost a culture of concealment, for lack of a better word. There were interviews made at the FAA’s New York center the night of 9/11 and those tapes were destroyed. The CIA tapes of the interrogations were destroyed. The story of 9/11 itself, to put it mildly, was distorted and was completely different from the way things happened”. (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/08/01/AR2006080101300.html?sub=new)

7. A 27-year CIA veteran, who chaired National Intelligence Estimates and personally delivered intelligence briefings to Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, their Vice Presidents, Secretaries of State, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and many other senior government officials, and who has for years been a tireless anti-war advocate and critic of imperial foreign policy (Raymond McGovern) said “I think at simplest terms, there’s a cover-up. The 9/11 Report is a joke” (http://www.opednews.com/articles/genera_alan_mil_070922_seven_cia_veterans_c.htm).

8. According to the Co-Chair of the Congressional Inquiry into 9/11 and former Head of the Senate Intelligence Committee, Bob Graham, an FBI informant had hosted and rented a room to two hijackers in 2000 and that, when the Inquiry sought to interview the informant, the FBI refused outright, and then hid him in an unknown location, and that a high-level FBI official stated these blocking maneuvers were undertaken under orders from the White House(http://www.buzzflash.com/contributors/05/11/con05439.html)

9/11 Panel Suspected Deception by Pentagon

By Dan Eggen
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, August 2, 2006

Some staff members and commissioners of the Sept. 11 panel concluded that the Pentagon's initial story of how it reacted to the 2001 terrorist attacks may have been part of a deliberate effort to mislead the commission and the public rather than a reflection of the fog of events on that day, according to sources involved in the debate.

Suspicion of wrongdoing ran so deep that the 10-member commission, in a secret meeting at the end of its tenure in summer 2004, debated referring the matter to the Justice Department for criminal investigation, according to several commission sources. Staff members and some commissioners thought that e-mails and other evidence provided enough probable cause to believe that military and aviation officials violated the law by making false statements to Congress and to the commission, hoping to hide the bungled response to the hijackings, these sources said.

In the end, the panel agreed to a compromise, turning over the allegations to the inspectors general for the Defense and Transportation departments, who can make criminal referrals if they believe they are warranted, officials said.

"We to this day don't know why NORAD [the North American Aerospace Command] told us what they told us," said Thomas H. Kean, the former New Jersey Republican governor who led the commission. "It was just so far from the truth. . . . It's one of those loose ends that never got tied."

Although the commission's landmark report made it clear that the Defense Department's early versions of events on the day of the attacks were inaccurate, the revelation that it considered criminal referrals reveals how skeptically those reports were viewed by the panel and provides a glimpse of the tension between it and the Bush administration.

A Pentagon spokesman said yesterday that the inspector general's office will soon release a report addressing whether testimony delivered to the commission was "knowingly false." A separate report, delivered secretly to Congress in May 2005, blamed inaccuracies in part on problems with the way the Defense Department kept its records, according to a summary released yesterday.

A spokesman for the Transportation Department's inspector general's office said its investigation is complete and that a final report is being drafted. Laura Brown, a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration, said she could not comment on the inspector general's inquiry.

In an article scheduled to be on newsstands today, Vanity Fair magazine reports aspects of the commission debate -- though it does not mention the possible criminal referrals -- and publishes lengthy excerpts from military audiotapes recorded on Sept. 11. ABC News aired excerpts last night.

For more than two years after the attacks, officials with NORAD and the FAA provided inaccurate information about the response to the hijackings in testimony and media appearances. Authorities suggested that U.S. air defenses had reacted quickly, that jets had been scrambled in response to the last two hijackings and that fighters were prepared to shoot down United Airlines Flight 93 if it threatened Washington.

In fact, the commission reported a year later, audiotapes from NORAD's Northeast headquarters and other evidence showed clearly that the military never had any of the hijacked airliners in its sights and at one point chased a phantom aircraft -- American Airlines Flight 11 -- long after it had crashed into the World Trade Center.

Maj. Gen. Larry Arnold and Col. Alan Scott told the commission that NORAD had begun tracking United 93 at 9:16 a.m., but the commission determined that the airliner was not hijacked until 12 minutes later. The military was not aware of the flight until after it had crashed in Pennsylvania.

These and other discrepancies did not become clear until the commission, forced to use subpoenas, obtained audiotapes from the FAA and NORAD, officials said. The agencies' reluctance to release the tapes -- along with e-mails, erroneous public statements and other evidence -- led some of the panel's staff members and commissioners to believe that authorities sought to mislead the commission and the public about what happened on Sept. 11.

"I was shocked at how different the truth was from the way it was described," John Farmer, a former New Jersey attorney general who led the staff inquiry into events on Sept. 11, said in a recent interview. "The tapes told a radically different story from what had been told to us and the public for two years. . . . This is not spin. This is not true."

Arnold, who could not be reached for comment yesterday, told the commission in 2004 that he did not have all the information unearthed by the panel when he testified earlier. Other military officials also denied any intent to mislead the panel.

John F. Lehman, a Republican commission member and former Navy secretary, said in a recent interview that he believed the panel may have been lied to but that he did not believe the evidence was sufficient to support a criminal referral.

"My view of that was that whether it was willful or just the fog of stupid bureaucracy, I don't know," Lehman said. "But in the order of magnitude of things, going after bureaucrats because they misled the commission didn't seem to make sense to me."

So what exactly the bush administration was trying to hide?

but interestingly enough, those facts were just enough to 'blame al Qaeda and muslim terrorists' immediate after 9/11 attack(actually within a few hours, i believe). Not only that but also those 'facts' were enough to invade and destroy a country. urban myths anyone?cheers

mnowsa: It is actually very simple albert. every criminal, even after using their best efforts, leaves some 'clues/trails' behind while doing his/her dirty works. And the police uses those 'clues' to capture the culprits. But the only difference in the case of your so-called 'co-conspirators' is that they very well knew that nobody would care to find of capture them no matter how many clues they left behind.

And you have been able to identify them? How many were there anyhow?

mnowsa: i mean why would the 'real culprits' worry about clues and getting caught when decisions were already made to blame 'muslim terrorists' for the actions in 9/11?

Of course you have proof that 911 was well known in advance right? Why on earth didn't you say something?

confused Maybe within a few hours of 911, they (the US Government) had checked the passenger loading videos and had taken phone calls from the
family members of the PA that had talked to their family members abroad the aircraft.

To ID most of the 19 hi-jackers and to learn that the PA had been taken by 'middle eastern men'..................

This is aside to the conversation and thread. But did you 911 truthers ever stop and think of the pain you cause the 911 surviving families? You are almost as cruel as the men that took planes on 911. JMO.

I always wondered about the 19 men, GWB would have had to find to hijack the planes if the 911 truther position was accurate. First off, they would have to give up their lives for a GWB, a new President only in office for a 1 year.

Secondly, since they all died for GWB.....were are the 19 American or foreign families missing loved ones? 19 men don't just disappear from the planet without some family asking questions.

Then again.....considering.....Iran in a week's time once got 6000 men from Tehran to sign a statement that they would commit suicide attacks if the US invaded. Maybe finding 19 to commit suicide is not so hard.

See in the Christian and Jewish faith this suicide thing is really frowned on. GWB being a Christian, would not have a large number of Christian Americans willing to commit suicide for him. Were as much of Islam seems to have different thoughts on suicide.

Then again you never had the families of the 19 alQeada hijackers saying they were still alive and well on the planet after 911. Seems they all accepted the 911 Commission Report as being factual to who hi jacked the planes. And they never asked for any of the remains back from the US.
