What you giving up for lent? (39)

Feb 19, 2012 1:13 PM CST What you giving up for lent?
Ok folks pancake tuesday in 2 days time and after that comes lent.

I dont make new years resolutions but always give up something for lent.
(not for religious reasons, just find the time limit easier to manage)

My normal choice to give up is a non runner.....nothing to give up there this year.

So who's going to give up something for lent this year?

Lent isn't exclusively about 'giving up' something, it's also about 'doing something' - visit an elderly person, regularly - do their housework, regularly - do their shopping, regularly. wink

for me its more about having a manageable time frame in mind when doing something...whether it is giving up something or like others, in starting something. Its not about something religious for me but a handy pre-thought out time scale. 40 days.

I'm giving up alcohol....i dont drink much by even light drinkers standards but moving house in a few weeks so every penny helps.
And gotten into the habit of having a few drinks when out, when last year i would quite happily go out and have a sober night.

I also have a shocking sweet tooth so giving up buns/cakes too.
Doing the mini marathon this year so anything thatll help the fitness kick to coincide with the increased walking in preparation will be a good thing.

Jesus was in the desert for 40 days being tempted by Satan, so Lent commemorates this joyful occasion.

One thing about Catholicism, they always use words like "celebrate mass", "the good word", and "Christian holidays". To me, the whole thing seem to be about suffering and denial. Oh wait, the faithful are going to Heaven. . With the Christian concepts of joy and sin, heaven would be an awful dull place if indeed it existed. laugh

I usually give up chocolate or alcohol for Lent. I'm not religious either but its a good excuse to detox for a few weeks.
