Many prosecutions of late are making people realise the law of the land applies to the internet as well.

I'll try to give it to you in a nutshell--it's complicated. He is a now dropped-out Rutgers University student who secretly web-cammed his dorm so he could catch his room mate and gay friend, and publicly out him, etc... which he did. The victim committed suicide. When it unraveled, he was indicted on 15 charges of invasion of privacy and bias intimidation. He had a chance to admit it and escape prison time, but decided to throw the dice at court. He lost. I'm glad.

Look at what something that he probably thought was a petty prank can manage to ruin and even destroy the lives of so many including his own. Damn shame he acted before he thought.

Hi Rohaanwave Some really sick people about these days. What people get up to behind closed doors should stay private.

He will live to regret the error of his ways especially inside.wow

Hi beautiful. I don't know why exactly this case was so important to me. I watched "In Session" all last week, and the man just sat there and looked bored (yawning) and kind of belligerent, spoiled rich kid syndrome (even the newscasters said so). It was the result of the prank (too bad, if you ask me, that he couldn't be held for the victim's death JMO). I am always sorry to see someone's life in ruins, and so young, but he did a very, very wrong thing, and bragged about it. He deserves every minute of prison. and more.

Oh my God!! How sad!!

If he has a conscience (as in not a sociopath), his own mind is going to hurt him a lot more than whatever prison sentence he gets.

How sad to do such a thing to a friend. If he admitted it, he would have had to admit to himself he´d pulled the trigger on his friend. May be he was hoping that the courts wouldn´t see it that way so that he could pretend to be able to live with himself.

As Gini says ... A lot of ruined lives sad flower

An update in case anyone missed it. Yesterday Judge Berman gave Ravi only 30 days in county jail and a mishmash of "sensitivity awareness" drivel, plus some community service. Man is the state ticked off. They are filing for an appeal of this flimsy, almost-nothing sentence. The verdict was in, and there was no frittering around about it. All jurors found the spoiled bully guilty on ALL counts. I expected the judge to go somewhat easy on him (3 years prison or so...) but what he got was as near to as letting him walk as it can get. Your thoughts, everyone?

thank you. (Something tells me this case is going to get really really nasty. The judge is going to be called on the carpet by the government. The guy (Ravi) is clearly guilty of bias intimidation, which is a hate crime, even if the judge doesn't see it that way. Watch this case unfold in the next few months. )

MADDOG69: What was his motives?

I don't know a hell of a lot about this case but providing the benefit of the doubt I'd say that on the outset he was a fairly regular selfish kid who was playing a prank but after reading the crap he did in court would say he has a mean streak in him a mile long.

MADDOG69: What was his motives?
His motives were to humiliate his room mate by publicly outing him with a secret video. The "core motive" being hatred toward gays. The specific charge was "bias intimidation" which the state equates with a hate crime, which is illegal. The judge ruled that bias intimidation was not a hate crime; a departure from legal interpretation. The state (New Jersey) is filing for an appeal. If they get another judge, it is likely they will overturn this present judge's sentence, and impose one that is far, far more severe. One of the aggravating aspects is that the state offered Ravi a sentence of no jail time and no deportation in the beginning, and he snubbed his nose at this extremely generous offer. It is my opinion that this judge could be unduly influenced by some faction or another. JMO

Albertaghost: Possibly some justice will come forth with a civil case.
The entire process will be re-tried. Perhaps the agonizing prospect of being in the hot seat for another year could be a deterrent. It is obvious from watching the case for several months that Ravi, though youthful, is completely out of touch with the reality and consequences of his crimes. That is a tragedy of its own. What a mess for everyone involved. I would be inclined to be gentler with Ravi, for young people don't always make wise and prudent decisions. However, there seems to be no conscience here. If he were to be incarcerated for a couple of years with people outside his privilege and comfort zone, he might learn a few things. JMO
