Glengirl: Two of my sons aunts offered him money if he wouldn't go to New Zealand for a year

My eldest is only 20 but I am in no hurry for him to move out. He will get his first proper taste of independance at the end of next year when he goes to Spain as part of the Erasmus programme. That should teach him what he is made of. The only one I might have real problems getting rid of is my daughter. She's the one who can't live without her home comforts.

A friend of mine still lives at home, age 47.
The problem is that some day his parents will die and he'll be in trouble then as he'll be living in the house he grew up in and all alone, he'll have to make a transition then and he might be too old to do it.

Hello my name is Green Sleeves, I'm 28 and I still live at home blushing

I dont exactly want to be here but the career choice I took meant it was the only viable option for now (plus its where my workshop is, so, I'm not renting a premises as such). I pay my way, cook, do my own washing, ironing, have been known to shower myself on occasions and am would love my own 'space'. My folks certainly dont look after me, I'm capable of taking care of myself, I'm just here due to current circumstances frustrated

Sounds like you would leave if you could, GS, but there are a lot of those current circumstances going on. I don't think it is possible for grown kids to always leave home these days. I certainly wouldn't want to get rid of mine. They are fun to have around even if they do drive me mad sometimes. I'm certainly not going to be bathing them or cutting their toe nails, but, since I haven't done either of those things for any of them for a long time, I don't think I will have to. Of course, if they are still here in 10 years time, I might change my mind but it's all fine now.

Was working full time at 17, moved out to Dublin at 19. It's funny how some of you said your parents sold your bed, or you're throwing out your children's beds when they move out - my Dad sold the house. rolling on the floor laughing

There's been times when I lost jobs, or got stuck at the end of leases, but just kept going. Preferred to do my own thing, and sure the house was gone. laugh Could get a book out of some of the places I've rented since. uh oh

Not sure about people living at home - some have genuine reasons, others make up excuses. Some families are close, some people find it too handy at home, and some are there temporarily. I think that a person has to strike out on their own and do their own thing, and the late teens is a good time to do that. If they don't do it then, they may never do it, or find it difficult to develop properly as an individual. Get out there, go hungry, be poor, have parties in your house, move to places where you know nobody and thrive, spend your last 20 quid on beer, argue with companies that bill you, stay up all night doing whatever, meet someone and offer them beans on toast for dinner - do all these things, learn to appreciate what you have, build character in the process. Would have hated to have missed out on all that.

To all who can't afford it, I lived in Dublin on 300 a week paying 70 rent, not including bills, insurance etc.
Lived in Naas on 160 a week paying 90 rent, not including bills. So come on now. laugh conversing
