This could have a bearing on how his son reacts to the news and how comfortable he is with his Dad being overseas for lengthy periods.
Not to mention, without wanting to appear sanguine, that many women on here have managed to raise boys on their own who have become wonderful men (in response to the male role model issue).
I'm not suggesting for a second that this would be the case, but for a year or so's trial, it's really not the end of the world
So true about role models, much to be said on the topic. My son who had no father around other than school holidays when he went over, has grown to be a wonderful young man, independent and confident and right now overseas for a good part of this year. Many examples of this as you said.
Unless you sign up to be shot into space, AA, if you ensure your son will be safe in a secure environment, then seriously consider spreading your wings. You can turn this into something exciting for the two of you.
Perhaps AA could broach the topic by asking his son how would he like a free trip overseas, ermmm, twice a year. Oh, you do? Well, son, here's the thing, it's like this...
