AgentAjax: It still wont stop contracted viruses spreading. The incubation period for some viruses can be days to several years, while still having the capability of spreading to other bodies.

Precisely. So why go to such lengths?wine

Queensland has got a very nasty virus at the moment, the Hendra Virus has reard its ugly head again, that is spread by the fruit bat.
Horses seem the most vulnerable and they in turn pass it onto man.

Vic Rail a Trainer made famous by the horse he trained Vo Rouge' was one who died of that virus plus others, this might not mean anything but heard that his stables were filthy and rarely cleaned out even before this virus showed up... so it could have given the virus a chance to spread and evolve as quite a few of his horses died or were put down because of it as well.

The Virus is passed on by bodily fluids and maybe dirty drinking water so cleanliness is vital apparently.

it’s a nasty one. I would hate to be a vet at the moment. That’s what happens when you don’t manage numbers and in QLD they are out of control. kiss

wash2u: There are many diseases that Australia (and NZ and Hawaii) are free from. Our animals have not been exposed to them and therefore have no inbuilt immunity to them. And some diseases also affect our plants.

Our quarentine rules are very strict yet people continually try to smuggle in plants (with soil attached) and salamis "just a reminder of home." If 1 in 1 million gets sick from the sprays but it stops the spread of Mad Cows Disease, Anthrax, Foot & Mouth Disease, Hendra Virus, etc then they can suffer knowing our flora and fauna are safe.

Qantas have very strict controls on their airline food (most of it still tastes like crap). The Sydney-Bali-Singapore run takes enough food for the whole trip as they do not believe that Bali can provide the food to their standards. Not the only run like that but one I know of. Although things may have changed over the last 10 years when they have sourced cheaper products.

Sorry, Venere, you may have suffered Bali-belly or something similar instead of reacting to the spray. As your profile hints, you split between Adelaide and Puglia so you must surely travel airlines a bit. For someone who seems quite inteliigent, why don't you simply wear a facemask when they spray?

Hi Wash, It doesn't sound as if you have travelled much overseas, if at all lately, because they no longer spray when passengers are on board. I thought I'd mentioned it. They wouldn't dare these days. I only copped it once only in 1982 when I was returning direct from Rome with my then husband. No Bali belly. I became violently ill within an hour or so of landing and the spraying.
(Now, you also are intelligent...If I knew in advance that there were to be such spraying, and knew in advance that it was to happen, you don't think I wouldn't wear a mask??...You don't think everyone else would, too???uh oh)

Im sure I said none of the viruses can be spread from human to plant. There are some various that can be spread from human to animals and vice versa but that is due to the fact they have been genetically modified in a lab. beer

AgentAjax: What the hell was “the red rains in India all about”?

Got any that you know off to share?

Sounds like someone's been reading Book Of The Dammed by Charles Fort or some of his others still being published by The Fortean Society. They are also still keeping tabs on very odd and similar events around the world, being published in The Fortean Times...Love Charles Fort.

Things certainly have changed since 30 years ago. They still spray, just that you are not aware of it coming through the aircon. The marvels of Glen20.

I know this Wash...I had made it clear that the spraying continues but NOT WHILE PASSENGERS ARE ON BOARD. This means it happens before they get on, sometimes not at all. No passenger is to know...Please read my posts before replying. It saves me repeating myself and boring everyone witless...laugh
doh

About that spray: Glen 20?...I don't think so.
"D-phenothrin and other synthetic pyrethroid pesticides are nerve poisons (Ecobichon, 1990; Rao and Rao, 1995), and have also been reported to have reproductive and endocrine-disrupting effects (Eil and Nisula, 1990; Brody, et al, 1993; IL EPA, 1997)".

Also:

I might start a separate thread about this on the Inters, as many people would not be aware of this behind the scenes toxic spraying. Some people might have an immediate need to know due. I have no idea how anyone can take this topic so lightly, despite not being a flyer yourself.

And now back to the main topic of the thread.

Driving to work this morning, I saw a white rainbow. I called it that to my mate as it looked the right shape of a rainbow stretching from the horizon over the car. Early morning, a bit of rain around and it was very odd for a white cloud like that in an otherwise dark sky. A few minutes later, all the colours came out.

I have heard of it before, though never witnessed it myself. It is sometimes seen at night or early in the morning before the sun adds colour. cheers

Looked it up and usually called a "fogbow" as it usually appears in fog. But nothing said about it changing to full spectrum.

I was driving directly into the sun when I noticed hard right to me. Maybe as the sun rose and I kept travelling, them colours became apparent.

Next time (as if there ever will be) I will stop in the middle of the freeway to get a picture.

I have always been curious as to why the science world has been preparing for the doomsday by crating a seed vault and the DNA vault if there is no concern for the end of the world?

A seed vault/bank is a good idea. We have had so many different plants disappear over the years because they weren't "economically viable."

Just out of Melbourne with an apple orchard that has over 50 different varieties and continually looking for more. The sizes range from plum to rockmelon, and all different colours. Never been there but saw it on ABC a couple of years ago.

And 'corn' is another one fast disappearing food. Over 100 different types have been identified but we see only the one type normally, although the multicoloured one seems to appear in some specialty shops.

Landline recently had stuff on potatoes. We all like our white fluffy centres (grew up on Robertson potatoes) but having had the yellow variety from SA recently, I'll go for the flavour. And costs the same.

They are even trying to commercialise the purple potato. Not sure about that, looks a bit odd. Then again, we now have purple carrots on the market. But they go orange if you boil them.
