Narrow Minded vs Personal Preference? (69)

Sep 5, 2012 6:04 AM CST Narrow Minded vs Personal Preference?
So I was talking to a wan over the weekend just gone. Things were going grand. During the course of the banter she asked me what religion I was. roll eyes Without answering, I said 'Does it matter??'. She said 'It does'. With some annoyance I said I was Catholic (as was she). And then I went on to ask her what if I said I was some other religion, as in Anglican, or Methodist or whatever?? I can't remember the words she used, but I'm pretty sure she indicated it would be a deal breaker. Anyway, I didn't like that.

So... my question is, is this a reasonable preference to have regarding the religion one was born into? Make note that no such questions were asked regarding actual Maas attendance, or whether I even really believed in the Roman Catholic God. I gathered, it was more to do with the general background I was from.

Is it right that I judge her harshly on this? Is it right to assume that they'll be narrow minded problems on a whole other range of issues down the line? If she ticked every other box, is this a deal breaker? Especially in this country with it's not so rosey past with Sectarianism, her attitude did not sit well with me at all.

I think I know the answers already. Just pisses me off...

not there are areas on this island where your life would and could be made hell for dating a different religion. So maybe she was thinking to herself there is no point in starting anything with someone unless they are her religion.
Or maybe she is looking to get married and have babies and she wants a big church wedding to to rear her kids as good catholics? I dont know. I would find it weird but there are some people out there that religion is still very important to.

Is it any less shallow than being with someone because of their looks?, Job,? Bank Balance?

Ah... you're probably right. The annoying thing is she didn't give me any of those reasons.... just said... 'just because' when I quizzed. Maybe the parents are a bit of an influence there somewhere.

MADDOG69: haha. 'wan' .. sort of phonetically rolls of the tongue, I'd probably refer to my closest and dearest females as 'wans' at some point. They'll always be 'wans' I know what your saying, though.

Im glad someone knows what im saying cos i dont most of the time uh oh

And returning the conversation back over hundreds of miles of cyber space i can see you mean it as a term of endearment for all thumbs up

Can i also add for me if i didnt go to mass i know i would be a bit of a weirdo who would go off the handle and listen to them voices in my head to kill people and hurt people uh oh

So for me its good ..... I dont like them young american guys in black that go around peoples doors in twos, but after i took some in last month and sharpened my knife sayng death is beautiful i havent had any more coming around confused

Damn those voices , they seem to be getting louder and its a few days to mass ......might just watch this thread a bit closely and see who needs to meet the Lord on my Priority line grin

fast_and_furious: so u wouldn't get married in a church?

Nope, not for any woman. Not out of spite you see, but why would I get married 'in the eye of god'?! I'd be getting married in an institution that I have no interest or belief in and I'd be lying to myself and lying to her by pretending.

She was probably knocking you back because she didn't like your shoes or teeth or something like that but she didn't want to show herself up as shallow so she tried to appear deep and thoughtfullaugh

I'm like you Mc. I am not religious but I will get married in a church if I do tie the knot and I'll do the whole big Irish Hotel wedding thing too. It's great craic and it's tradition.

Most people are not religious now but they still get married in churches, have their kids christined, and they make their communion and confermation. It's more of a tradition now than a religious act.
