This Saturday, 1,000 cities and towns across the world celebrate World Car-Free Day. Could you do it? In the U.S., Massachusetts is the only state participating. I rhink this is a great idea.
I "celebrate" Car-Free Day every day, because I don't have a car.
Not only am I saving almost $14,000 a year by not driving a car, but also I leave no carbon footprint whatsoever.
Of course, I recognize the necessity for a car if you live too far from work or if you have inadequate public transportation.
montemonte: Well Sassy, in 1996 I lived without a car for two and a half years and took the train to work everyday.
Now I have a car that I pay $2,400 a year for car insurance.
Luckily the car is paid for but the insurance is a killer.
good galley gee, monte! Are you a high risk driver? I drive a $63k auto but only pay $600 annually for regular car A+ insurance plume $100 more to it a million dollar umbrella on my stuff. Why does yours cost so much?

I don't work and have great public transportation, but none of it takes me where I mostly want to go since I, like most folks, live in the suburbs here...

No, I'm not a high risk driver. I was in a accident in 2010.
NJ is a no fault state.
My premium used to be $600 for six months.
After the accident it doubled to $1200 for six months
That's how I pay $2,400 a year and that will be until Sept. 2015
And I really can't afford it but I have no choice. People tell me to go with Progressive cause their cheaper BUT you get what you pay for and I've heard Progressive doesn't pay well with their claims..

Holy smokes! I left progressive for Erie insurance in 2008 and I've gone to better coverage and much lower premiums since then. I found out the hard way that pgressive isn't on your side. I'll bet half the cost of your premium goes towards paying Flo's salary.
I am one of the very fortuate ones for sure. My middle son bought the Explorer for him, my oldest son pays the insurance and my youngest does oil changes and other minor repairs. I have a pic of my awesome ride on my profile.

I have no bus going by my house at all (wouldn't you know it?), and the nearest bus is 1/2 mile away. And then they want people to take public transportation???? Hah!

I would go crazy and make a car out of a lawn mower and a cardboard box.

Just farting leaves carbon footprint guess you aren't so perfect after all Think about the cows they are the best at polluting the air you know the old saying "farting till the cows come in" well there are millions of people in this world polluting the world including you one way or the other the list is endless in the way we pollute this planet.
Cars are just one way to pollute. So what I am trying to say by you not driving isn't going to help at all. JMO!

Well, if he means he rides a bicycle everywhere he goes then he is eliminating his personal transport carbon footprint. Even using public transit lessens it considerably! But, yes there are SO MANY other ways we create or share in a carbon footprint that many may not realise.
I have a small truck & a midsized van. There are stretches of 7 to 12 or so days that neither one moves. I hate going anywhere, people have become so much less civil around here that I prefer not to deal with them. Peoples hatred/greater self-importance is just going from worse to worst! Not to mention gas prices(oops I did) so I try to plan out my errands & do them all in the same journey out. Get it all out of the way, then relax & settle back into living in my little world I have going on here.

Your average dairy cow farts 40 litres of methane a day.
