There's talk about burning the ivory confiscated from poachers. This has been done several times to bring awareness to the problem. Unfortunately the people who are most concerned with saving the elephant from extinction don't seem to have a clue about a basic economic formula D/S=P where D = Demand, S = Supply, and P = Price Increasing the Demand with a finite Supply = Higher Price. Decreasing the Supply with a finite Demand = Higher Price. Increasing the Price with a dwindling Supply = Extinction! The price of Ivory has gone up tenfold in the past 5-7 years.
MICKEYMOST: http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/nature/top-of-the-conference-agenda-the-last-chance-to-save-the-rhino-8513792.htmlPosted this a few days ago to bring awareness of the decimation of endangered species. Seems no-ones interested Ooby.
It's a damn shame to wipe out an intelligent, social animal that has inspired and served mankind for 1000's of years just for some trinkets and chop sticks. I was hoping that some of our members from Asia would spread the word and help to educate the people who are consuming this stuff. Anything that can be made from Ivory can be made from plastic that looks almost identical.

The same could have been said to North Americans about buffalo in past centuries. I don't think they would've listened. Should poor Asian people listen? I wouldn't if it meant not being able to put food on the table.

I don't think it's the poor Asian people who are benefiting from this, but the Neo wealthy Asian people who can now afford to buy trinkets made of a precious scarce substance. Nor does the poaching of elephants for their tusks help to feed poor Asian families. It doesn't even benefit African natives who do the actual killing because they probably make extremely little being at the start of the "food chain" so to speak. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that African native poachers get less than 1 percent of what is paid by an affluent Chinese lady from Singapore to buy a broach made of Ivory to wear around her neck.
