I don't use hotmail but I know that when they changed to Outlook, I was affected by it and couldn't read my email. I found out that the reason was because I had an older version of Firefox. The changeover to Outlook required a newer browser version so I was forced to get a newer version of Firefox to read email. I don't know much about the browser you're using but the problem you're having might be due to your browser version as well.

If you are happy with Opera and want to continue using it, check out this link as it seems many people were having the same problem you're having...looks like Opera version 12.01 has the fix for the issue.
