sophiasummer: Hey Jac been through your thread, great! I posted on that thread yesterday and was shocked to see my one was one that was hidden I enjoy posting on threads at times, especially when ther'es fun banter going on.
I'm know what I posted was down the lines of supporting you. I said "I think ther'es a conspiracy happening here Jac
then I inserted a quote from Arthur Conan Doyle “Skill is fine, and genius is splendid, but the right contacts are more valuable than either.”
Then signed off"Jac is my friend" grin
Man! to get banned or hidden on those words, was just beyond me. Could'nt understand it, it actually freaked me out lol, I know I can be a mad confused poet at times. But come on!
Oh well that's off my chest.
Might be a good backdrop for my next poem I write
Carry on my dear, I think you are such a cool person, I enjoy all your comments, love the tongue in cheek that goes on. Your wickedly informative too.
I know I would never write anything to hurt or discriminate against anyone.
Thanks for reading as I know you will, have a cool day Jac, and also to all the coolest people we know here, I'm off out now, so, "in them and at them baby"! I'll pop back in later.

Make that a mad, confused, Nubian goatherding poet.
I'm sorry to hear your hiding freaked you out a bit and I would have said that was a misuse of moderator powers as well.
I'm going to ponder on that quote. I like it and can learn from it.
Tomcats2: yes peopl should not attempt to inimidate others but should not hide their education or knowledge any how i know what i mean
no emots dont work for me on any thread and i miss mr bananaman not the same without the little guy
Does absence make the heart grow fonder, or is it out of sight, out of mind? Is it, "don't hide your light under a bushel, or "a wise man keeps silent"; is it, 'put on armour and fight ferociously, or "the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong"? Everybody has a different twist on things. The devil sings psalms for his own devices. JMO

So how do you feel that impacts upon your perception of thread author moderator powers?

I wonder if we could also perhaps discuss how we each perceive how thread author moderator powers may be used and whether our perception matches up with the official guidelines?

lifeisadream: Variety is the flavor of life Jac!
Absolutely Life, it would be rather dull otherwise, but does interest extend as far as a the drama of conflict?
As I understand it, the moderator powers are a means of conflict resolution, but may they actually be used for the opposite purpose? If this is true, perhaps they're not that functional.
If its a matter of personal responsibility, then how we perceive they should be used becomes a factor.
I'm wondering if there may be rough factions in perception, maybe those who would never use the moderator powers, those who would use them in extreme circumstances as a last resort and those who believe the power is entirely up to the discretion of the thread author and should be used exactly as they please.
I'm also wondering if there's a link between perception of moderator powers and other perceptions of power and control.
I'm wondering if there's a link between perception of moderator powers and personal power and control issues. Can we learn something about ourselves from our attitude when given the practical means to have power and control?

Hi Jac What I see is that we tend to categorize everything and everyone in right or wrong. However, trying to broaden one’s perception, things and people (or people and things) can be more than that or less.
For example:
Obama vs No-Obama Men vs Women Religion vs No-religion God vs No-God To use the moderator’s powers or not Etc and etc…..
The above could easily be classified in wrong or right but they can be both wrong or both right perhaps, or neither.
What I find very relaxing is to leave room (in our brain I think) for accepting, respecting and exploring other’s beliefs, positions, likes, etc.. which are different from ours.
No one is the owner of the absolute truth although are there any absolute truth(s)?
jac379: ...... Can we learn something about ourselves from our attitude when given the practical means to have power and control?
Yes, we can learn something not only from ourselves but from others as well but Do we want it? Can we do it?

Re: Pack Attack, or Differing Opinions?
Hidden Post (What’s This?) Current upset in the forum appears to be coming from members being banned from threads by OPs and then hostility by the banned member being carried over into other threads, creating an unfriendly environment in the forum.
The purpose of the OP Ban Tools is to give an OP the right (and the responsibility) to keep the peace in their own threads. We encourage an OP to use these tools early to prevent their thread from going bad due to fighting and posters who just enter the thread to stir up trouble. An OP ban is a ban from that one thread only. A member banned by an OP is still free to post in any other thread. This is a light-handed way to help keep peace in individual threads before they blossom into more major problems which result in the heavier hand of staff who would ban the member from all threads, not just the one. If you create a thread, you need to be willing to use the tools when trouble arises. When you don't use them, staff will lock or delete a thread that is mainly fighting rather than discussion of a stated topic.
As the OP of a thread, you may use the tools to stop or hide ANY post or poster you feel is disrupting your thread.
As a poster, you have the option to leave a thread you don't like, or not post in threads created by members you don't like. But if you enter a thread and start or are involved in disrupting the thread, expect to be banned by the OP, or eventually by staff.
A thread belongs to the OP (the member who created it). The process is self regulating. An OP who posts good topics, prevents fights, and uses the Tools fairly will have popular threads that many will join in. If not, the OP will have threads that are avoided and not popular. There may be groups of members that choose to post with a certain OP because they like the member or share like opinions on various topics. That’s ok. There’s plenty of room in the forum for many diverse groups to post. But if a group enters a thread to stir trouble, disrupt, bully or belittle the OP or the topic, that is a ‘pack attack’ and that group should expect to be banned by the OP or/and by staff.
If you get banned from a thread, for whatever reason, GET OVER IT! and find another thread to post in. It's immature to carry on in thread after thread about being banned, or to lead a crusade against the OP who banned you for what you consider 'no good reason'. There's ALWAYS a reason! And you're out because of it! So GET OVER IT! If you don't like the OP, you shouldn't enter the thread in the first place.
An OP will post a topic they have an interest and opinion about. It’s just their opinion. Don’t expect the member to be a total expert on their topic, to have all the answers. Responses to the topic should be your opinion on the topic, posted in a friendly way… not a harsh cross-examination of the OP, demanding proof and sources over and over again. Lighten up. Remember the purpose of the forum is to make friends and have fun. FUN!
The OP Tools are good, and when used by mature adults, will make the forum a better place. The Thumbs feature was an extremely good feature which is widely used with success on good sites all over the web. It was well thought out and a programming challenge. But members couldn't handle it here and it was removed. The OP Tools are here to stay! Post with respect and tolerance and they won't need to be used…on you. ------ THIS THREAD IS LOCKED AND DOES NOT ALLOW REPLIES ------

If you were having a discussion in a normal social environment, would you dream of showing someone the door if they didn´t agree with you???????(banned) Would you make them stand in the corner?????(hidden post) Would you knock their heads off?????(delete) Probably not, so why do it here on a social forum.

There are people here I wouldn't have a discussion in a normal social environment in the first place, so if someone doesn't adhere to "normal social standards and behaviour" and gets abusive etc. I think it's acutally better to ban them.

Thanks for this, Happy. Very interesting.
I've covered the 'self-regulating' and some other points in my previous post to Life, so I'm just going to pick out a couple of points from this.
So, if I were to create a thread to discuss in practical terms how we should exterminate all people over 5'4", its entirely at my discretion to ban those who argue that exterminating the talls is inappropriate?
But what if I feel its my social responsibility to exterminate those pesky talls?
I wonder why its only CS members who are too inadequate to use such good features?
lifeisadreamMexi Go, Mexico State Mexico16,713 posts
jac379: ..... But what if there is a general feeling of disdain for shorties and those threads are widely supported by those over 5'4"?
We could say that diversity is great, the heightist people are entitled to their opinion and if the shorties don't like it they can start their own threads. What if then the talls flood the shorties threads with disruption? What if the shorties refuse to use their moderator powers, use their moderator powers to ban all the talls, use their powers to ban all people causing disruption, or have their moderator powers taken away from them by the site moderators who are all over 5'4" and never thought shorties were really human anyway?...
Yes! Ban all the tall and very tall that are women (then there will be more guys per women)
jac379: I can find the forums rules and a guide for 'tolerance', but I can't find a guide for using the thread author moderator powers, that is the correct use for hiding posts and banning people from a thread.

I don't have the answers Jac....the only ones with the answers would be the mods....instead of putting this under the chat maybe it should of been put under suggestions and feedback where they could at least realize your concern I have always looked at it as this is a free site and it is not my site. So I am not the one making the rules and if I don't like them I can go. Lets say I was a guest in your home. Everyone in your house liked to sleep in but I don't so I decided we all should start getting up at four in the morning because that is how I felt it should be. In my mind we all would be healthier and more productive.
How would the rest of the house feel that I who am not a paying member of the household I am just there reaping the benefits of your makings now would like to change your house rules? Well if you really think that there is a call for changing this then maybe you can get them to listen. The one thing I have not seen alot of since they changed it to where the op has the ban features is the mass bannings they use to have. Where you would wake up the next morning and lots of the profiles here would be gone because they all got caught up in a thread that was spiraling out of control and got banned.
