rohaan: Absolutely spot on. We have got to stop giving people the benefit of the doubt simply because they have problems, family, mental or physical health. It is not the green card to act dangerously. Why, if we do that, everyone will get a pass. Just what DO people think is going to happen to someone who tears through a highly protected space? When airmen shoot marauding planes, are they thinking about that enemy's family milieu? Honestly, would everyone out there just try to think a little? Police aren't anxious to arbitrarily gun down a car. There has to be a reason, and a good one, and in this case, there most certainly was. Honestly, I can't believe some don't "get" it.

Jezzz.. thank god there are not to many of your kind doh

It was a complete balls up by the officers concerned whatever the circumstances. There actions were unproffessional, and if she did have a bomb, they certainly didnt get a grip of the situation, they just escalated it,putting the child and members of the public in danger, with a chase situation, guns blazing, not knowing where the bullets would end up.
When she was at the barriers, they could have ended it,but they failed to block her in,and then stood and watched her get her car out.
I am sure there colleagues around the country are not impressed.
Every excuse will be made for them,by the authorities, but i dont think there will be police officers who would want them as a partner.I know i certainly wouldnt.

You are so off the page. You are trying to somehow blame me for just putting it out on the table, exactly what happened. Many of our police officers do help people in need. You are deliberately missing the point, for some weird agenda. Your attack on me personally is inappropriate. I have as much right as anyone to answer any thread or post. You may disagree, but you don't have to be so nasty. I see that you apologize to some CS members from time to time. The United States of America is a wonderful country with good solid communities, so your tirade about us is unfounded. Even so, no worries--you don't have to come here, you know. Funny how the line waiting to get in is a lot longer than the one waiting to get out. Many of us are trying hard to hold our country together, and if you don't wish to cheer us on then at least don't be yet another part of the problem. It's the decent thing to do. Funny, too, how some other countries cut us down and then come running crying when the going gets rough and they need us.

We weren't in those shoes that day. No one understands the other guy unless they are going through the exact same thing. Please try to understand, and not vilify people you don't know. It's the fair thing to do, even in tragedy.

I can imagine that time was short, noone wants to shoot a women with a kid in a car...they may have been in the situation that they had to make a call and fast....who knows? what if those around were then hurt or run over etc.....She may have been lost I dont know? but she had to have known being so close to where she was , would have ramifications?

Rohan is right many people in tragedy dont think about how its going to be for those who had to take part.....I pity the officers as to what they had to do, and I hope they are not identified in any way..

All people who are armed as part of their profession be that police, military, security etc are bound and governed by strict operating procedures or rules of engagement, the officers who opened fire will need to be able to justify their actions and no doubt be the focus of an enquiry into the incident. Whether or not they were justified in their actions will in time be revealed (perhaps). But all the operating procedures and rules of engagement don't take into account the Human factor. What one person deems to be a threat another wouldn't. At the end of the day a woman is dead and some police officers have to live with the fact that they've killed another human. It's a no win situation for anyone.
You can train day in and day out to react to any given scenario, but ultimately when the proverbial hits the fan instinct sometimes overrides the training.

I really don't understand what's happened here. There are so many conflicting stories.

Even reading this thread, which I have done because not too many people here in Spain know about it, has not clarified too much. dunno

Perhaps, but the rules of engagement have been changing, as well as the training that officers receive. In the past lethal force was a last resort. Nowadays it's not. The standard now is, if you think there might be a danger, shoot to kill.

And even though there are strict procedures, police are seldom ever held accountable for killings even when they violate the procedures.
The only exceptions are when there is too much public outrage.

Now her family has a lawyer and they have started their own investigation.
They have found witnesses of the final stage.

These witnesses claim that Miriam was shot AFTER they pulled the baby from the car.
Also Ive heard live reporter report the same.

So it seems she was out of the car, the police took their time to retrieve the baby from the car to get it out of the way and then open fire on the mother.
Sounds like brutal murder to me.
