Service stations in New South Wales and Victoria are already rationing petrol and South Australia could be next.

Of the more than 200 Cootes trucks inspected in Victoria, almost 80 have been grounded and almost 90 per cent defected for oil leaks, dodgy brakes, and faulty suspension of chassis.

Cootes trucks are expected to be back on the road by the end of the week – and the state government said motorists should not see a jump in prices.

The NSW Rural Fire Service has issued extreme fire danger warnings for the heavily populated greater Sydney, greater Hunter and Illawarra/Shoalhaven regions. A total fire ban has been declared for 15 of the state's 21 regions.

While the mercury in Sydney's central business district is forecast to climb to 37 degrees, regions around the airport and suburbs elsewhere may experience 38 degrees or higher, said Brett Dutschke, senior meteorologist at Weatherzone.

The temperature may challenge the 37.4-degree early season record set for Sydney in October 1942, and the all-time high for the month of 38.2 degrees, which was set nine years ago.

The payment was part of an initial $56.3 million distribution to 12 political parties and nine independents by the Australian Electoral Commission.
The Liberal Party received $23.1 million in funding while Labor pocketed $20.1 million.
The Australian Greens ranked third with $5.3 million followed by the National Party on $3 million.
The Palmer United Party will receive $2.2 million.

It had David Leyonhjelm elected to the Senate and will receive $1.03 million in public money.
The Nick Xenophon Group generated $636,127 while Queensland independent Bob Katter's Katter Australian Party only netted $166,711.
The one-issue Bullet Train for Australia Party earned $24,283 for its campaign coffers.
Cathy McGowan, who unseated would-be cabinet minister Sophie Mirabella in the Victorian seat of Indi, topped the independent funding tally with $68,381 ahead of re-elected Tasmanian MP Andrew Wilkie ($60,802).
Serial political candidate Pauline Hanson, former speaker Peter Slipper and controversial independent MP Craig Thomson missed out on any funding because they polled less than the minimum threshold of four per cent.

Former Australian cricketer Nathan Bracken's failed attempt to win Mr Thomson's seat of Dobell generated him $17,439.

Having just finished a semi-fictional novel where "political funding of candidates" was an issue, I do see that there has to be some form of reimbursement for those that have a genuine interest in our political and economic future rather than "we paid for you to win, you pay us back."

yeah well myself i think its an obscurity, that a person riding upon 20 million party bonus for dreaming big time and being paid in excess of $480,000 needs to claim money back from the people to ride his bloody bike

The Liberal Party received $23.1 million in funding based on the votes they received in recent election
a number of occasions tony abbott claimed reimbursement from the people to attend a number of weddings, he has since apparently repaid the ones he has been sprung claiming, in addition he has on more than one occasion claimed reimbursement for travel expensive for running in a marathon and racing on his pushbike and says he fully intends repeating the latter as its part of his parliamentary entitlement
while i also referred to he is now also in receipt of PM's pay and allowances

Don't have a problem with that. There are many companies that pay their employees to undertake health programs and cover all expenses.

At least this PM is willing to mingle with ordinary people and not hide in the Parliamentary gym (Dining Room).

This is the 2nd PM who does show he is willing to look after his health. Howard did his morning walks, and nothing was funnier than the USA Secret Service following him around Washington & New York on his morning walks.

And the PMs pay? I think there are a lot of Local Council's paying their CEOs more than that. And only a fraction of what the CEOs of Telstra, Qantas and a lot more private companies are paid. Ziggy got something like $13M one year when Telstra shares were dropping.

China lectures US on 'responsibility' over debt default
China has lectured the United States on its responsibility to make sure it does not default on its debts, as the political deadlock in Washington forced Barack Obama to pull out of a key summit
China on Monday delivered a stern lecture to the US to live up to its responsibilities as the cornerstone of the world’s economy and keep Washington’s political crisis from spilling over into a global financial calamity.

Choje Akong Tulku Rinpoche, who has died aged 73 in a violent incident in China, was a Tibetan lama who co-founded the Kagyu Samye Ling monastery in Dumfriesshire, the first Tibetan Buddhist centre in the Western world and still one of the few outside Tibet.

By the early 1990s, one important mission for Akong Tulku was the search for the 17th Karmapa, one of the most important figures in Buddhism after the Dalai Lama. In the continuation of the tradition which had found him in the 1940s, Akong Tulku played an important role in the search party for the reincarnation of the Karmapa and settled on Apo Gaga, a seven-year-old from Eastern Tibet. The Karmapa later fled into India amid concerns that the Chinese authorities wanted to influence his teachings and use him as a political mouthpiece.

That's terrible, but not surprising. Now that they have some economic clout the Chinese are starting to flex their muscles, taking over Tibet, and eyeing off various islands around their coast.

Kiwis resent their raw deal on this side of the ditch

The productivity commissions of Australia and New Zealand completed a joint report last year on the trans-Tasman relationship and found Australia's treatment of Kiwis was unreasonable, unjustified and required change.
