unlaoised: slightly different yes but it still has a hint of being something one should do as opposed to what one wants to do
Young lady, I do not wish to split hairs over wording. Of course, I want to do it, you wish to do it for your parents, but I did mention in my first post, other societies view it as a moral obligation. With that being said, let's absorb all the positive vibes.

Glitch101: I agree with Reb and Redex. Make your own provisions for your future. Not everyone HAS family.
Some people are incapable of caring for elderly parents, albeit due to their own commitments, or the depth of care and input needed to sustain a parent at home.
It's no easy task and there are no easy solutions, but one shouldn't feel the burden of guilt if unable to cope.
Whatever people think of the UK there is support out there ,financial and otherwise,if you take the trouble to look for it.j.m.o.
I did take care of both parents and sister without regrets may I add BUT would not wish that on my sons. They well know there mum is a very independent person and do know what I would do in extreme circumstances and of course respect that too. It would of course be good to say goodbye to the best men (sons) in my life BUT LOOK AFTER ME!!! no never. My life is mine and my responsibility my ending will be of my choosing.
As a society? No. In fact my hope is that the state goes bankrupt before all the death astronauts die away. If young people can't get jobs or a roof over their heads and face a future at the food bank because of what baby boomers have done then I don't see why the elderley deserve to be fed. They are the empitome of the undeserving poor.
Then it's just about the individual: have you raised your kids properly so they will look after you when your senile?

Yes My kids are grown men and no I would not expect them to look after me I would be horrified. I changed their nappies but would HATE it in reverse
Girljuice: Should adult children take care of their elderly or sick parents? Is there a moral obligation?
Definitely yes. I assume most people love their parents no matter what. In most western countries we also pay taxes for health care facilities, where they take care of elderly people.

As an afterthought to some of the comments raised in this thread, sometimes the care of a parent can be taken out of your hands.
A husband has the only control over his wife, not the offspring,so if supposing he wanted his wife to go into care, there's not a lot you can do about it.
Had a pal who's stepfather pushed the wife[ her Mother] into a dreadful home and she could do nothing about it. According to Social Services the decision was solely the Husband's.
